Default Back End Shake 02 S-type

Hey guys,

I just started having an issue where my back end is shaking left and right. It occurs when I accelerate and decelerate usually only between 1-30 MPH. On the interstate or city driving it runs fine with no issues. I was having a small feed back in the steering will, but that turned out to just be an alignment issue. I have very recently had the ENTIRE heating system replaced from the waterpump back and a seal replaced that was allowing oil to get into my spark plugs and cause a miss fire. The dealer said they could not find any other problems with the vehicle at the time and that was about 5 weeks ago. I am at a 116000. I have no idle issue, no shaking when parked or idling, no issue accelerating and brakes are new, less then 2k miles. My sister in law moved my vehicle about 3 weeks ago, she did not release the e brake and moved it all the way down the drive before she figured it out, but I did not notice any problems immidiatley following.

My S-type is a Automatic 4.0.

First thing to do is give a thorough inspection of the tires for bubbles or damage on both sides. I had a similar situation of vibrating in in the seat/rear end and it was caused by a tiny bubble in my rear Pirellis. Almost impercetible...

Just as a check. Might want to check the rotors. She may have warped them move it. Sounds almost like what I had when I warped my rears. If you know how to check runout you can check the rotors and the hub just in case the hubs are bent.

My first guess is inspect tires and wheels. have back tires rebalanced.

If it still continues..You may have a universal joint about ready to snap.

Thanks for the suggestions. The tires are a bit worn and need to be replaced soon anyway. So I ill do that tomorrow. I did not notice any bubbles, but my driveway is not well lit and its already late.

Ill check the rotors in the morning. Thanks for the reply, ill let you know. Ill also try throwing my summer wheels on and see if that does anything.

mrrevas - If you have a 4.0 then how do you have an e brake?
Do you mean you have a 3.0?
Or a 4.2?

I suppose its a handbrake maybe, perhaps a mix up in terminology, but its what I was use in an emergency and if my regular brakes failed and when I park on a steep incline.

OK, I'm confused- what's wrong with calling it an e-brake. E=emergency, no?

In any case, leaving it on for a short period as described would not do it any harm. 'Warped' rotors would only cause an issue when the brakes are applied, look elsewhere.

Ah. I expected e = electric or electronic, as in epb.

It's what happens when abbreviating to the point of no longer successfully communicating

Apparently the OP means a lever-type brake. I've never heard one of those described as e brake before.

Leaving the brake on when it's the EPB means it auto-disengages. With the lever park brake, I guess not good for any of the parts but I don't see it being the cause of the back end shake.

Rear end wobble at low speeds is usually caused by separated belts on a tire or a bent rim/wheel. You can usually feel it when driving very slowly as well. Like through a playground/school zone or slower. You could replace each rear wheel in turn with the spare and see if that cures the wobble. Rotors warp when overheated and moving the car a short distance with the park brake on shouldn't cause it them heat up enough as someone pointed out. Unless you have an awfully long driveway that is. Any decorative landscape rocks or curbs on or beside your driveway?

Tires that are out of round can do that as well. Rear-end shake may be caused by bad suspension bits but I`d be willing to bet that it has everything to do with wheels and tires.

I see. Is this similar to calling something a p-brake vs. a ?

Thanks guys, you have all been helpful. I went out this morning and noticed my front passenger rim had a slight bend, you cannot really see it unless your looking hard sadly, likley from the terrible pot holes here in Omaha. I did not notice anything on the passenger rear but I figured the back one may be damaged I just did not see it. Sure enough, I take it to Jensen, front is bent, back is cracked. Driver sides are both good, but the OEM replacements were a tad ridiculuos so they set me up with 4 new Wheels and 4 tires for a little more than it would have cost to get new 2 OEM rims/wheels. Hopefully this fixes the issue, Suspension, Rotors, and pretty much everything else in the back end did not have any damage. I did learn something interesting, the new Hyuandai Genesis, the rims for those are 1900.00 a shot, cant imagine. Its a Hyaundai...

Without my car until Monday, but my brother is gonna let me drive his SRT8 so I dont have to go pull my Transam out of storage. So not a total loss :P

Ill update on Monday if the issue is fixed or not.

Thanks Again!
