Default ballast

hi guys, ive been told by my mechanic that I need a new passenger side ballast and starter, (when I put my main beam on, bulb flickers then goes off) any ideas where (other than jag) I can get one from, I don't really want to use ebay as 1. not really sure the part will fit, and 2. not sure how long the replacement will last compared to a new one, ive got an 04 plate s-type 2.7d v6 sport, and live in Birmingham b31 any advice guys would be greatly appreciated,

@craig76: Beside cabling or relay there are three parts, which may become defect: bulb, ignitor, ballast. Before I would buy anything, I would swap parts from the other side. I did this job on my 2.7 Final Edition last weekend. I hand not that flickering but a totally dead lamp. I ordered a cheap bulb, but this was not the cause. So before I ordered other things I swapped ignitor and ballast. And found the ballast to be the cause.

Swapping means in my case :

1) Disassambly of several plastic protections, bumper cover with washer jet covers and both lamp groups (in my case 50 screws!!)

2) Find out what is defect and leave the car disassembled until you have the spare part.

3) Replace defect part and re-assemble.

My ballast was made by Hella and had the part number 5DV 008 290-00. I ordered it via German Amazon. But if your's is the same, you will find a lot of other sources, because it is a standard part.

HTH
Regards
Armin
