Default Battery replacement

Hey, are there any warnings or advice about replacing the battery?

I've been bit by the dreaded wonky electrical system probably caused by a bad battery. A couple of weeks ago things started to become strange (see my Sounds of Silence post to this list) when my radio stopped producing sound and my bluetooth phone function disappeared.

Yesterday the car was dead and my wife had to call AAA. They came, did a test, and told her it had a dead cell. Seems consistent with the other reports here about cars getting weird when the battery is weak.

Is replacement straight forward? Remove + remove - replace battery reconnect - reconnect + start car?

Yes, it's pretty straight forward like you said. If you want, many of the auto stores (Advance Auto, Autozone, etc.) will install it free for you.

I think the only thing you have to do after replacing the battery is re-calibrate the electronic parking break. It's straight forward. The on dash display told me what to do. (If I recall well...)

Just saw a YouTube view that showed that XF's have a voltage monitoring system connected to the battery. It claimed that batteries could only be changed by a dealer since they have the correct system necessary for initializing that system after the battery is reconnected.

Is that something that was added in XFs and it not in S-Types?

No such XF thing on S-Type. Make sure key not in ignition when changing battery. Buy correct kind, expect grief getting old one's clamp off, hook up vent tube to new battery.

Just change it and reset the parking brake, seat settings, etc. No big deal....

Good to know, thanks everybody

But, oh, for those people who experienced the low-voltage weird behavior, did everything correct itself after the new battery went in?

Yes it did (in my wife's XK8). My S-Type is still running its factory battery with no issues....
