Inspect the hand brake cable and lever at the caliper end make sure it is well lubricated and moving freely.

As well, inspect the cable as it goes through the loop at the caliper. Broken plastic clips can cause the cable sheath to get stuck in the wrong spot and hold the e-brake on.

it's dark at the moment but will whip the wheel off tomorrow and have a good look. it's not on enough to stop the car rolling on a very slight hill or bring it to a stop in N, but on enough to get really hot in 7-8 miles. i'll let you know what i find.

Had the wheel off today and the handbrake (parking brake) cable was pinched against the top of the (i think its called) the control arm thingy bolt. it had worn a very small hole through the plastic cover of the cable plastic. also the part of the brake where the cable ataches seemed quite rusted, freed everthing up and moved cable away from the bolt it was trapped against. got a 500 mile trip on the 4th so will see if its ok then.
