Default Boot won't open

Hello fellow Jaguar enthusiasts,

I hope you're all doing well. I'm facing an issue with my Jaguar S-Type from 2006 , and I was hoping someone here might have some insights or suggestions. The problem is that my boot won't open, with the boot button inside the car or the key fob but works manually. However, when I press the boot button or use the key fob, I can hear a ticking noise coming from the boot area.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem with their Jaguar S-Type? If so, I would greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations you might have. What could be causing the ticking noise?

Thank you
Mathis

Quite a few have.

Try the key in the keyhole.

Sometimes the mechanism casing distorts creating too much resistance for the lock to release. When unlocking, also give the boot lid a helping hand. It might come free.

The keyhole works maybe its the boot latch?

Two things come to mind:

Try pressing down on the trunk lid while turning the key or a helper presses the button. If there is too much tension on the latch, it may not fully release. On my car, the rear door on the driver's side is like this. This door sees limited use, and the latch often doesn't release unless you push in at the same time.

Or:

Try lifting up on the trunk lid. I think the rubber seal provides some of the initial push to pop the lid open. On my car, the seal seems to have lost some of its springiness and doesn't always pop open by itself.

Careful, I'm guessing your trunk lid is aluminum.

This worked on my 2001/2005 since my trunk got stuck. First option is use to the ski hatch on the rear seats and use a coat hanger to grab the emergency cable that's was I did on the 05. On the 01 I carefully removed the rear tail light with a flathead screwdriver, cut or like I somehow did remove the plastic screw holding the liner in and you can either unbolt the trunk latch which is pretty hard to do or grab the seat release at the back of trunk and and allow you to get through the seats and either unbolt the trunk lock or pull the release cable. I'm not sure if this will work on the post 04.5 cars but it will on pre facelift. I have pretty long arms and it was still a pain and burned a set of tail light fuses and bulbs doing it since I grounded the tail light accidentally

Is it possibly switched to Valet mode?

I checked the glovebox and there is no Valey button I think the 2006 didn't come with it.

Not fitted in the UK.

Can accidentally come into effect if you take the glovebox off, take apart the connector behind it and don't re-make the connection afterwards (yep, that was me).

This implies the latch is receiving the electrical command to actuate, but it's not being translated to mechanical action.

Does your trunk have an external button? If so, that makes three methods to send the electrical signal:

1) Key fob button
2) Dash button
3) External button on trunk lid

Maybe double check the external button causes noise from the latch, in addition to the other two inputs. All three methods are inhibited via the valet switch, but apparently your car does not have this feature.

If indeed you're consistently getting the click from the latch, I'd look at the mechanical side of the latch. The click would be the actuator moving. Perhaps something in the linkage has come undone, and the mechanical motion from the actuator is not being transferred to the latch. Meanwhile, the mechanical motion from the key cylinder is reaching the latch. Your mission, should you choose to accept, is figure why one mechanical input works but not the other.

Thank you for your advice I think I will replace the actuator.

Just took the rear boot cover off and the noise is coming from the rear control module. Could this be the problem?

Couldn't get the video to play. Do I understand correctly the clicking is coming from the REM? I'm very confused as I thought it was all solid state inside.
