Default brakes

2003 S Type 4.2L

The dealership told us that you cannot "turn" the rotors on this car because they immediately warp. Is this correct?

Can we source the pads (and rotors) if needed by a vendor other than the dealer? Say NAPA or Advance?

Thanks

You can indeed turn your rotors if they are still thick enough to remain in tolerance. But you may not need to....

Last time I sourced S-Type brake pads was March 2011. I ordered them online from rockauto.com. I went with the Wagner ThermoQuiet semi-metallic pads based on my success with them on our other vehicles, and they have been great on our S-Type as well. Silent as a tomb, and much less brake dust compared to the factory pads....

You can find Wagner pads at Advance Auto Parts and other stores. But rockauto.com was at least $20 per axle cheaper at that time. Wagner usually runs a rebate deal regardless of where you purchase your pads....

Why do you want to turn them- this is only done as a last ditch attempt to save deeply grooved surfaces, NEVER as routine servicing!

+1

Otherwise you're throwing away good metal.

You may well hit minimum thickness, too.

No no no - I'm with you guys. Don't turn them unless they need it, absolutely. Rockauto has been a good vendor for us on other parts. I completely forgot about them.

Man, this is the place for the info. Thanks.

I had Joyces rotors turned about a year ago. They are still within specs.

I went with the "Zones" Duralast ceramic pads.

Morrison be sure to go with ceramics, alot less brake dust!

Everyone should know about the great discounts you can get at Advance Auto by using a discount code, which can be find anywhere on the web. They will also allow you to use them over the phone if you call their 800 number.

I normally use Retailmenot
Advance Auto Parts Coupon Codes - all coupons, discounts and promo codes for advanceautoparts.com

I just compared rockauto.com against Advance auto using the discount code BIG15 (better codes depending on how much you spend) and Advance was cheaper and they offered free two day shipping. I normally just pick the item up in the store.
