Broken Rod

Broken Rod
Hi all, first time poster here. Last Saturday I went to start my car and it wouldn't turn over. I had it towed to the local dealership and they said I broke a rod in the engine. Unfortunately, my warranty expired about 2 months ago when I went over 100,000 miles. Does anyone know what the engine model number is for a 2005 s type r and any place that might have them available. My dealership is telling me its gonna be about $10,000 to repair/replace and thats just not acceptable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

Yes, there was oil in the engine. There was no warning of anything going wrong either. I drove it in the morning and when I when I went to drive it again in the evening, it wouldn't turn over at all. The weather was about 5 degrees but I can't think of that having anything to do with it. I am considering taking it to another mechanic but I dont see why the jaguar dealership would lie to me.

Don't do business with these guys. Your car has overhead cams...which means it does not have pushrods.
You cannot break what you don't have !

Noodlearm,
I ran a query for STR engines on car-part.com and I got three hits (2003 though). Two at $4500 and one for $2000 although this might be non-supercharged. You can play around with the search criteria to find what you want.

To the original poster. Please describe in as much detail as possible how and under what circumstances the car broke down that led it going to this dealer.
I've blown two rods in my drag car, and trust me it's an event you will NOT soon forget.
Take care,
George

Oh come on, a thrown rod is a lot more sexy sounding. Sounds like you were really driving the thing hard ...
Who are you gonna impress with "my battery died" or "the starter jambed".
Solenoid? That's Fer sissies.

Thanks for all the replies. As for some additional info. I am certain it is not the battery, we tried charging the old one and then installed a new one. As to the circumstances under which it occurred, it was on initial startup after sitting the whole day. There where no warning signs of any kind while driving it that morning. When I went to start it, all the power came on, and the ignition turned, but the engine never cranked, not even once. I don't know much about engines, so I will try to answer any questions as best I can. I am going to take it to another mechanic who specializes in foreign cars for another opinion. Also, thanks for the link to car-parts.com. Again, I appreciate everyones advice.
Thanks,
Brian

It's not especially likely, but what you described does not rule out the battery. It also does not rule out all the important electrical & electronic items all of which need to work for the car to start. You really need someone who understands the STR or at least thoroughly understands the electrics etc on the redesign (2003+) S-Type and who also can use an appropriate (dealer-type) OBD tool for that car. (You've got a highly complex performance thoroughbred, not a downmarket high volume car.)
It COULD be a rod but is is VERY unlikely. Go for the basics first (there are a lot before you get to a rod).
Does anyone know a reliable place he can take the car?

You popped something electric, or the security system isn't letting the car start (the immobilizer in the key).
Does the car have power to all the accessories? Dash lights etc?
Take care,
George
