Broken Speedometer
My old S-Type -99 speedometer has given up and shows the car running at max speed even when it is parked. Everything else is working so I guess it is something mechanical. I need to repair or replace it. Anyone who has done this and knows where to start to remove parts. Do I have to remove the steering wheel?

RE: Broken Speedometer
Thanks for the info. I disconnected the battery but the speedometer remained dead. The rest of the dashboard did respond but sadly not the speedometer. I´ve checked the fuses which are ok. Any more ideas before I start to tear things apart. Does anyone know which part in the dashboard panel to remove first.

RE: Broken Speedometer
My Jeep did this more than once, and I can't remember how I reset the gauge. It kept occcuring when the battery terminal was shorting, and it would peg the speedometer/tach gauges, but the speedometer would often get stuck there.
I think, with the key turned to the accessory position (no ignition), I disconnected the battery again...reconnected, and it 'cycled' from 0-max on each gauge. The speedometer would catch this time, and fall back with the tachometer. Couldn't hurt to try...

Also, before you dismantle the pack, try tipping it sideways to get the needle to drop the other way, then reconnect. May just be a glitch. The wiring diagram is important.
When you get to that point, I will give you wires to check. See if a signal is being sent to pack to say "Hi I am doing 160 mph!!!"

RE: Broken Speedometer
Hi, the speedometer works again!!! We teared things apart and removed the speedometer. This was pretty straight forward. The only tricky thing was that we had to remove the glove box before we could loosen the last screws. Then tipping the speedometer sideways solved the problem. Thanks guys for your support and help.
