To buy or not to buy...

I've been a longtime VW owner but my wife's 2007 Passat wagon's many problems have caused me to look outside the brand. I have fallen in love with the lines of the s-type but am scared by the many horror stories of tranny issues. I found an ivory white 2002 for around $9k and i want the car bad but i do not want to get involved in paying for tramsnission rebuilds. Am I paranoid, how frequent are these failures? I know that the people who don't have problems don't post about their satisfaction...only the people that have problems post. I am mechanically inclined, I do my own maintenance and even restored a '79 VW rabbit for my sons first car, so the window motors, brakes and light issues do not bother me. Any advise or others experiences are appreciated.

The extensive research I did in December 2008 just prior to purchasing our S-Type convinced me to go with a 2005-or-newer model. Better reliability, better components, and nagging bugs such as failing coils had finally been resolved by the 2005 model year. The expectation is also that the 6-speed ZF transmission is a big improvement over the 5-speed ZF transmission and certainly the Ford transmission that was used in the early S-Types (1999 through 2002 I believe). So I bought a 2005 and remain glad that I did. Our 6-speed ZF remains smooth as silk at just under 41,500 miles. The car had just over 18,000 miles when I purchased it....
But you need to be aware that transmission fluid for these 6-speed ZF units is expensive as hell. A one-litre bottle of ZF fluid at a Jaguar parts counter will cost you nearly $60. Yes, I said $60. It can be less expensive to order it directly from ZF, but it still costs substantial money. So read up on these forums and draw your own conclusions. One thing is for sure - if you're not a do-it-yourself maintenance type, these cars are expensive to pay to have maintained....

A 2002 should not cost more then 8k and that is with less then 100k on it.
I think you should def. get a 2003 as that is when all the upgrades were done and new tranny and everything. Also, remember this isn't a vw or honda, one little thing will cost you well over $300. So you really need to do your oil changes and take good care of your car.
To be honest with you, I was just like you; thinking 'wow all these horror stories about s type tranny issues, reliability, im so scared something will go wrong'. well nothing has and its hands-down the best car of my entire life, this is a car where you actually want to drive it. its beauty.
