Default Called Dealer about Transmission Fluid Change

This all started with a couple of phone calls.....

I called my indy.tech I have going to for a while and wanted to see about having the brakes done. I have also been getting the lurch again. I had him replace the front seal on the trans when I first purchased the car and all has been well until it got cold. He had told me he used the required trans oil. After a long discussion about the brakes and trans., he confessed to using Autozone's generic ATF. I left not happy.

I then called my local Jaguar dealer to see what it would cost to have the transmission serviced. I was told, as others have been, that it sealed for life but if I wanted to have it done it would be at least $1700 + $150 for a inspection fee. That is 6 quarts of jag trans fluid, filter, pan and new screws "because they are not designed to be removed". I then asked about having the TCM reflashed. I was told it would be $250 + the $150 inspection fee.

I knew it would be expensive but this is borderline crazy. What do you guys think?

I got a couple of other local indy's that I plan on contacting tomorrow.

The fun continues............

At least $1850? Is that dollars or pesos? Sounds like a joke to me. I would just get the pan and fluid and do it yourself or find a shop that would charge a reasonable amount to do it. What kind of inspection is $150? The pan/filter should be about $150, and the Esso fluid runs about $15/quart. I believe it takes ~6 qts, but I don't remember off the top of my head. While you are in there, change the electrical connector that is prone to leaking so you don't have to tear it apart again. Its cheap and easy to do. I believe there are several threads covering the tranny service, search is your friend.

Did you ask him if that price came with a reach around?

I will stick with my 20 quarts of mercon sp for a full flush for 4.xx a quart from Ford.

Quartz - I'm struggling to figure out which Esso fluid. OE is ZF LifeGuard 6.

Even so, the OP's price just shows they don't want to do it.

???? Thats way too high even by a dealer standard, and theyre F.O.S. on not designed to be opened. If that were the case there would be bolts in the pan and a FILL plug in the side. We charge $1300 parts and labor including electric sleeve and a reflash(well I do, some charge extra for reflash) through the dealer. But we dont do tranny flushes or drop and fills. This is when leaks are found and pans need to be replaced

You are correct sir. The Esso fluid I was thinking of is equivalent to LG5, not LG6. I probably had BMW on the brain . The LG6 is closer to $22/quart.

Just as an aside, the list price for the sleeve from the Jaguar dealer in Hilton Head SC was less than $11.00 and they sold me one for $8.00!

Best sleeve price I've seen yet. Wonder what their price was for a litre of Lifeguard 6....

I never asked--I bought fluid and pan from a BMW shop--$120 for pan and $22/l for fluid delivered. The Jaguar P/N for the sleeve is C2C39599.

Indeed, but <$300 for parts and not a very difficult process to do yourself. That's a $1500+ savings over the dealer!

All due respect but if the fluid etc. is ~$300 how does the labour amount to $1000?
