Rick,
I've had this annoying phenomenon on my XK8 for a few weeks now. Co-incidentally it's the same blink code of [1 + 7] flashes repeated three times before settling to a constant AirBag warning light.
On the XK8 this indicates a fault with one of the passenger sensors. The S-Type experts should be able to confirm if your model uses the same blink codes.

From the codes for restraints in JTIS (free in the FAQs), that's passenger seat weight sensing fault either in CAN circuit or pressure sensor circuit
A bad connection (under seat I think) is typically the trouble, see previous threads / JTIS for where / what you're looking for.

A group of 5 flashes then 2 flashes indicates Flash Code 52. Code 52 = Front safety belt buckle or seat track position switch fault.
In order to find more detail on tis fault, you'd need to have the DTC's read. The AirBag ones are Bxxxx codes and it takes the Dealer equipment or something like AutoEnginuity to read them.
