Couldn't you buy one or two coils and see which one is not properly working?

The injector cleanings are not a part of a scheduled maintenance. There are things I would do first before going after bigger things. Especially with no light on. First, ECM reflash. The reflashes can cure many minor running conditions. Next the injector cleaning. I mean a real one, not just putting an additive into the tank. Next I would look at the coils. They can start to break down and not flag a code.

Start there and see what happens.
FJT,

I purchased some Dura Lube fuel system cleaner/additive and the pulsating seems to pretty much have gone away and is less noticeable for the most part. I used to really notive it at low RPM's, going up hills, and went up one of the same hills today (additive went in the tank on Friday) and the car didn't do it at all...

I was wondering if this is obviously the problem, in regards to the injectors needing a good cleaning, and I know there is a TSB 30321 that addresses the issue...

Anyways, just wanted to say thanks for noting that the injectors could be the problem...I'll still have the ECM and coils looked into...

I had the same pulsating issue and eventually it got bad and the check engine light came on. Got the codes scanned at Autozone and it came up as p0303 which means "cylinder 3 misfiring". I replaced all spark plugs but the issue didnt go away then I ran a diagnostic on the ignition coils one by one. You need a voltmeter for this exercise (where I measured the coil resistance for each coil, it has to be between 0.5 and 1 ohm) if anyone coil shows anything different replace that coil. In my faulty coil I could not get a reading, it kept wavering whereas the good coils always stopped at 1 ohm. SO i replaced the faulty coil and lo behold the car moves well and now I am getting great mileage. I still have sunroof and a short circuit problem which I am working on :-)
Thanks for the info...I'm definitely going to have my coils tested at my next service (50K)...

Anyone know if there are cheaper Ford coils that will do or for the '03 R does it have to be jaguar coils???

I have a 2000 s type-v6 and I have been having the same issues with vehicle rough at idle and jolting when going up from 80km to 120km.. At first it was the six cylinder misfire code, so I got the mechanic to replace all the plugs, and switch the coil from one to the other. It started driving fine for some time. But it got worse recently when I mixed fuel grades 87 & 91. The engine code came on for cyl 1 misfire. Now the mechanic is telling me to just replace the faulty coil, buttaking FJT's advise I should probably replace all or at least the 3 under the engine compartment side, pain in the neck toget to them in the first place. Thanks for all your inputs, I got a quote for $200+ for an after market single coil believe it ro not(in Toronto). So as i understand I will probably call ford dealer for price or go across to Buffalo to buy from auto zone for $50.

I'll put in another vote for a coil. Had to replace a few on my wife's '01 4.0. I just did another this week.

I'm not sure if you have the luxury but the Jag coil for the '01 is $77 over the counter. I did some referencing and cross referencing online. The 3.9 LS and Thunderbird use the same coil as the '01 4.0.

I'm using Motorcraft DG-515 coils. With 5% discount from RockAuto they are less than $45 each. They don't show up under '01 Jag of course but if by searching on DG515 with Motorcraft as the manufacturer they come right up.

The coils are very straight forward to replace.

I should have read the entire thread before posting. I see that the DG515 is already recommended. They work fine and will definitely save you some money. At the price on ebay replacing them all makes sense if you have some miles on the car. Do the job once and change the plugs while you are at it.
