The starter won't engage unless the transmission thinks it is in park or neutral. Try this:
Foot on the brake
Key to on
Move the shift lever until either P or N illuminates (the lever position should agree with the indication, but not so if there is a problem)
Key to start
If the engine now turns over, something was wrong with the shift lever, the shift cable, or the neutral safety switch. The next step will be figuring out exactly what. Remember to keep your foot firmly on the brake, as it may start in gear.
Make sure you get the P or N light on first before turning the key to start. If you hold the key to start and then move the shift lever around, the PCM won't let the starter engage. It has to see P or N first.

Could be the trans / car are unhappy about what gear etc is selected and if so it's usually one or both bolts loose/missing that hold the shift cable to the trans side (get under car, follow shift cable with your eyes and see where it fastens on). Small, about 8mm, just need to be snugged up usually - but sometimes one/both fallen out.
