Default catalytic converter

I think it's about time to replace my catalytic converters, I haven't got a code yet, but when I first start the car in the morning it has a rattle like metal sound comming from the drivers side around where the CC is.

It sounds like a heat shield rattle. the sound quits when after a couple mins. I don't want to replace the whole exhaust just the CC. I want to go with a universal Magnaflow I think.

should I get a 2 sensor high flow Magnaflow Cat.?
should I get 2inch size?

Would this match up and not throw any codes?

Should I replace just one side or both at same time?

Suppose it's just a heat shield and the cat's fine. Would you still replace the cat?

It may be the heat shield, I am going to check that this weekend, however if it is the Cat. according to my questions what should I get?

Now I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think I recall reading about others doing exhaust work and most seemed to suggest sticking with 2" rather than a few who went with a 2.5", assuming the car is mostly stock.

Update, I went for a pretty long drive today 4 hrs total. About 2 hrs into it I got a PO430 code. The car was running great, I cleared the code and continued driving it never came back on. Is this a cat.convert code?

If so drivers or passenger side?

I have replaced the precat o2 sensor on the driver side so it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry for the newbie question but would you mind telling me real quick how to clear the codes? Does it also get rid of the tell tale murky area on the screen in the drivers info area? I had a leaking coolant overflow jug and everytime the antifreeze would get low it would make the low coolant light come on and the tell tale would get longer and longer each time. I'd like to get rid of it because it's annoying and the car never actually ran hot or anything.

take it to autozone they can clear the codes for you,or unhook your battery and hook it back up or buy a scanner tool to reset you ecm.


Question I have the elm327 can I monitor my cat. conv. to see if they are bad?

If so what is good settings vs bad?

Go with a pair of Magnaflow hi-flo cats...even if the stock cats are ok. Let her breath!

Which magnaflows should I get?

Do I get the one with 2 o2 sensor outlets? and do I get a 2 1/2 inch on for stock pipes?

The forum members here (including myself) run the Magnaflow hi-flow cats without O2 sensor ports. If you find them with upstream/downstream plug-in ports, go for them. You want to use the cats with angled inlets and outlets for ease of installation. Check this forums search feature for topics on Magnaflow hi-flow cats. You can use the same magnaflow cats as "ttwotees". You'll see me, him, jag79, and a few others with magnaflow cats when you keyword in Magnaflow hi-flow cats.
Though we have STR's, you'll have a noticeable increase in throttle response and some gitty-up with Magnaflow's hi-flow cats, x-pipe, and mufflers. You can use either 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" inlet-outlet. Use a K&N drop-in filter and adapt on a modded air intake elbow too. This will def. let her suck in more air to compliment her better exhalation. Do a hard re-set after.

Thanks I look for the cats...have you got any codes after switching out the cats?
Also these cats should weld up to factory pipe ok?

...Exactly, stick with stock size 2.25" and get the Spun type Hi-Flow Cats by Magnaflow, thats what most have gone with either 2.5" or the 2.25" stock like I have. You will not get any codes whatsoever. For more info where to place the O2 sensors there's a few pics I posted up back in the past for the locations. I'm sure I saw some others do the same. Just have to search back in the threads.

achysklic, you won't be disappointed with the hi-flow cats. Pop on Magnaflow's x-pipe too ($85), this will help her develop more torque along with a very sweet note. Replace the stock resonator with Magnaflow's dual inlet/outlet muffler. Dump it all into a pair of Magnaflow mufflers. Use a K&N drop-in air filter and a modded air intake elbow. After all is performed do a hard re-set of the ECU. Your 300 hp 4.2 will likely become a 325 hp 4.2.

I was wondering why everyone uses a xpipe. If I get a xpipe res. and mufflers can I still use my factory pipe or do I need to run new pipe as well?

The x-pipe will mix the cylinder banks; smoothing out the cylinder pulses which helps the engine develop more torque. Use stock pipe.
