Question CD changer

How hard would is it to get and hook up the 6 cd changer in the S-type if the car was purchased without that option?

I found this when looking for info for you. In my 2003 S-Type, the CD Changer is in the trunk but I think older S-Types had the CD changers either in the trunk or, as the link describes, in the glove box.

Here's more.

The installation in a 2003 isn't hard (in mine it went to an existing bracket holder below the nav unit) but you need to tell the car that there's a new unit in the optical D2B ring which a dealer needs to do, as far as I know. Also, one extra cable was required, between the nav and the CDC, I think.

I think older S-Types (pre 2002.5) don't have the optical ring, though, so it's probably even easier.

Default CD changer

My S Type is a 2007 so I apologize if this is not relevant. It did not come with the cd changer but the guy I bought it from threw in a factory one. I took it to the dealer here in Huntsville. They charged me $200 ( 2 hours labor) to install it. I did need some "optical" cables, which was also included with the changer so I'm not sure how hard they are to find.

I have the factory CD in my 2000 S-Type, but I've installed a Kenwood DNX9140.
Eventually, I'll be removing the changer, but not sure when (possibly spring time).
The major difference between the cars is the glove box.
Its an entirely different setup.
You'll have to order, or buy the one which accommodates the changer.
I would get a quote from Dan Wicker at Nally for the new parts, or check e-bay.
Or, you can wait until I do mine, and we can swap parts

Thanks for all the inputs. I thought my wife was wanting the CD changer. But she does not. Not right now any way. I'll post again when she changes her mind.

Hi, I have a 2002 Jaguar S-type purchased in 2005 w/36,000 miles. Vehicle came w/o a CD changer, and Van Nuys, CA auto stereo place installed a Kenwood KCD-C467 in the trunk, because I had a Kenwood AM/FM radio in the car. In April of this year I hit CD on the dash and received message NO CD FOUND. I There were and are 6 CDs in the magazine. I'm now living in Palm Desert, CA, and had to send the changer back to company that installed it. There's no one in my area that knows how to fix the changer. Now it's December, and once again I am getting the NO CD FOUND message. Yesterday I learned that all Jaguar factory installed AM/FM radios w/tape cassette were Alpine. I am not thrilled with the prospect of spending $150 to fix the Kenwood changer. What to do? Try and locate a compatible Alpine CHM-S630? Or come to this forum and hope someone has another cost effective option to consider. Thanks for reading this post. I look forward to hearing any and all suggestions.

The first year S-Types had the CD changer in the glove cubby and the subsequent years had it in the boot. A 2001MY North American spec car will have the wiring behind the carpet in the boot.

I think the 2002 still had the changer in the glove box.
It is a different glove box assembly from the non-CD type.
It would cost you about $100 to change the glove box just to accommodate a factory changer.
Plus, didn't you say you have a Kenwood head unit now?
I don't think a Kenwood would cooperate with a non-Kenwood changer.
I believe the 2000-2002 years stereo was Denso, not Alpine.

Default CD Changer

I am calling Jaguar on Monday to find out exactly what radio was factory installed in my 2002 S-type Jag. Maybe that will set me on the right path to what CD changer can be installed.

A friend took off the cover of the Kenwood CD changer. Tere's nothing wrong with the changer itself. The problem is with the connection from the radio and/or adapter. Of course if anyone here has a "fix it" idea I'd certainly like to hear hit.

I had the factory GPS in my 2000 S and about once a month I would get "No Map CD present" or some such thing.
I would eject the disk, wipe it down, reinsert it, and it would be fine again for another month or so.
Optical media and readers are the same regardless of the application.
If the covers already been off, I would try alcohol swabbing the laser lens, and wiping down the CD's and see if that takes care of the problem.

I think you (or whoever took the cover off) would recognise it when you see it.
It will be the only glass piece under the cover, if its even visible in that unit.
Hard to explain without seeing it.
Glass / clear plastic looking thing, should be on some kind of track it rides in.

I guess this time it's me who will have to take the cover off ---- carefully.

Thumbs up cd changer

Finally located a professional in the autosound biz in the desert. CD changer worked perfectly, adapter needed replacing. Precision Autosound in Indio, CA knows what they;re doing --- not only replaced the adapter, but upgraded changer to newer Kenwood model and from 6 CDs to 10.

Your 01 uses the standard ford radio / cd changer. Things are much more complicated for 03+ cars.

You can get an ipod interface, and an older non video ipod for less than the cost of the cd changer, and have MUCH more flexibility. 6 Playlists of up to 100 songs. Which you can control / edit change on your computer.

Just food for thought.

Take care,

George

George, My S-type Jag is 2002, not 2001. If I followed your suggestion, local Jag dealer, or Jag customer support, correcting/repairing error message "No CD Found" for my Kenwood CD changer, cost would have been between $300-$400 + tax + labor.

Funny thing, when I was having problems with battery on my Nissan 300ZX, Z Forum had a myriad of suggestions to fix. Local auto electrical assumed because I am a woman that lights had been left on. I am not that stupid. In fact problem was button (sorry not good with technical names) under the clutch that connected to another piece under the accelerator. The problem was sitting on the floor mat, but genius mechanics only know "diagnostic test."

What I've learned on the S-type forum is all the things I shouldn't be doing. I just need to find smart mechanic.

2001 and 2002 are exactly the same radio wise. Both ford Based. If your CD changer failed, you would get the "No CD changer found message" If the radio failed, same thing.

Both pieces are available for less than $100 on ebay, but you can use the ford based cheap ipod interface (available for $30). And a cheap used ipod.

Dealers deal in OEM parts, and charge by the hour for labor. So they are only going to tell you their side of the story.

Take care,

George

George, Again --- there was nothing wrong with the CD changer. It was the ADAPTER (Blitz was the only one that worked after trying PIE's and one other). Adapter cost $129? I have no interest in owning an iPOD NEW or USED, or wasting my time uploading CDs for my music. Besides I'd still would have had to have professional install.

Btw ... I bought the Jag for my Standard Poodles, because I don't like SUVs. Also because I've always loved the bumble bee grill. I don't however like automatic transmissions. Jag only has 56,500 miles. I'd sell it if value hadn't decreased so much. Meanwhile I'm shopping for a Nissan 370Z with 6-speed transmission. Z cars are the best cars I've ever driven.
