Center console won't open

I'm brand new to this forum -- just brought home a 2003 S-type 3.0 today! And I have a really minor, non-urgent question.
In going over it this afternoon, I was unable to open the center console. It slides back smoothly to reveal the cup holders. But according to the owners manual it should also tip up to reveal the "cubby" behind the cupholders. Mine will absolutely not lift -- in fact, it is so resistant I'm wondering if some models were outfitted with a console that does not lift up. (Mine has the "sport" trim package, so some of the trim features are different than the manual shows.) Curiously, though, when I slide the console cover all the way back, I can peak in under the front edge with a flashlight and see the empty "cubby" including a 12V power outlet. So it certainly looks like they intended for me to get in there. The question is how?
Any thoughts? (As I said, this is far from an earth-shattering issue -- but it's kind of bugging me.)
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum Gary.
First off you really need to go to the "New Member" section and introduce yourself. This has great benefits.

Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for. I had searched the forums for "Center Console" but kept getting dozens of irrelevant threads. I guess I was using the wrong search parameters. Anyway, this answered my question and I got it open. Now I just need to figure out how to fix it...
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

How does one repair the latch assembly on the center console? Latch will release console top so that it slides open to reveal cup holders. There was another post on how to open console using a long slim screw driver which I did. After opening console it was apparent that latching mechanism was not releasing the side catches (one on each side). Any ideas on how to fix this?

Well, I must be Mister Unlucky because I bought one in platinum just a few days ago on the 1st of June '17 and the honeymoon is already done and dusted. My 1st discovery was the broken bonnet ornament followed by the broken glove box latch. Then I found the CD cartridge will not come out of the boot changer and today I discovered that the external mirrors do not fold [mine must be the Irish model]and the front armrest *** console lid doesn't always want to play open up. Oh! and the rear screen mounted radio aerial can't pick up my favourite radio station. I had read about the great sound system reproduction of the S type but it isn't a patch on my Ford 250Watt 13 speaker including sub-woofer standard fitment system which I'm handing down to my Melbourne son-in-law. My first ever Jaguar is becoming a nightmare and I've not had it a week yet. The Ford didn't disappoint
