Hello everyone, I have 2 issues that I need help with. I recently purchased a 2000 jaguar a type, 3.0 with 120k miles.I took it for the state inspection and was informed that there is no check engine light at all. When the key is turned to the second position the check engine light doesn't come on with the other lights. It won't pass inspection.

The CEL (also knows as MIL - Malfunction Indicator Light) should illuminate when the ignition is switched on. This is simply a bulb check. it should then go out when the engine is started.
Very unusual for this not to work. I suspect it may have been deliberately disconnected in an attempt to disguise an actual error code being set that was causing it to display during running.

No it's separate issue to the cel/mil ! If you switch your left indercator on and check to see it is infact not working then the indercator bulb will probably be blown , as for the cel/mil you need to pull the speedo cluster out to check the bulb , hopefully it is blown too or worse as stated removed ! There will be a Giude on the forum some were to do so ! I have read that the dash cluster wireing loom is very delicate , so be careful not to pull or bend any wires !

I have worked on too many cars and it most likely has been removed because the last guy could not figure out how to fix the car. As was stated above. More common than you think.
They RARELY burn out! But yes before you start the car turn the key to the on position so all your dash lights come on. Your MIL (check engine light) should be on.
Understand how the electrical system works because it's different than how they use to work. Check the bulb but it's probably OK. Maybe even change it just to be sure. But we have a switched ground electrical system in the S Type. So the REM (Rear Electronics Module) is responsible for switching that ground on.
If it's a front blinker or light then the FEM (Front Electronics Module) is responsible for that. So after checking the bulbs I would suspect either of these modules. No they won't set a code either!
Have you read the codes? What are they?

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is the correct name for the 'check-engine-light' or 'cel' that most people use on this forum. The MIL is located on the instrument cluster and you must use a code reader to identify the DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Code)s contained in the vehicle system to determine the exact problem with the vehicle.
