Default Common sources for Small vacum leak?

I don't like to post such an open question, but not much turned up under vacum leaks.....

I have an 03 Stype R, running fine, but triggered MIL light on the weekend and recorded a 'minor vacum leak' - I cleared it last night, and it has re-occurred today after several start run cycles.

I am not yet familiar with the vacum system, nor studied it, but I was hoping someone might suggest where to look, or kown culprit areas.

JTIS will show the fuel lines but more especially look at the evap-related stuff (quite a bit of it).
But first - check (maybe replace) your fuel cap. Must seal perfectly and I mean perfectly - so it can hold a vacuum.
Everything involved with the tank also must be vacuum tight.

If you read up on when & how the evap is tested and thus when the codes throw plus look at your freeze frame data it may help.

I'm guessing what you mean, BTW, as you didn't post the actual code....

Peter

A gas cap should come up as an evap system large leak.

What is the exact code you're getting? That should narrow it down.

Default P0456 Evaporative emissions leak detected very small

This is the actual code.

I also have a pre-existing powertrain code
in "module" 11
Pending Powertrain P1111 - code not found, - this may be a case of my EASE Generic system not being able to access the powertrain codes.
I am guessing module 11 is the power train controller, or likely transmission controller, and this may be my torque converter fault code...... we'll see.

Peter,

Usually this P0456 code is caused by an incorrect or faulty gas cap. Filling the fuel tank with the engine running could conceivable cause this code as well or if the cap wasn't properly tightened. Any of the following could also be the cause:

A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
The EVAP Canister may be leaking

I would replace the cap, cheap $ - Like under 20, a lot of fords use the same cap. (There's a surprise).. Let me know if u need a part #

After that I would clear the code and see if it comes back again.

So far we've proven that the wheel studs, intake manifold upper and lower gaskets, and gas cap are all avaliable in a ford box, for less than half the price..

11 is the PCM.
Your EASE may be trying to tell you that P1111 shoul be there but isn't. The way to tell is to look for the status of all the Monitors. All the Supported ones should be Complete. If they are, the PCM will store a P1111 (which is a status code rather than a fault). If one or more are not Complete, the PCM will store a P1000. Now, P1000 is a status code meaning that one or more of the monitors are not Complete, which is either normal (e.g. you recently cleared the fault codes and not enough driving has been done since) or a fault (plenty of driving but one or more of the monitors is blocked by one or more underlying fault conditions).

As you have a P0456, I would expect at least one monitor to be blocked. When you've fixed the leak and can do more driving, the monitors should all complete and the only code you should see is P1111. (Or, more codes may appear. Let's hope not.)

Default Thanks

Obviously, fixing the know P0456 is the 1st thing before worrying about any others.
I have lots of Fords, so I can swap a cap, I agree the gas cap is a likely culprit due to wear and tear etc.

If it is the cap and you change it, the code should go away. You shouldn't have to clear it with a scan tool.
