Confirmed Crossed Referenced Ford Parts that work with our Jaguars FAQ

Wow that would be sweet. I'm sure the LS is considerably less $$$.
I have to check my jaguar parts catalog, but I think it's ONE diff and ONE trans (trans part im certain about), for all S-Types regardless of v6, v8, or v8 s/c. I'm not 100% sure on the diff (if it changes by model). It looks JUST like a ford carrier but you never know.

It looks like 2006 tanks are really different, from a search on car-parts.com http://www.car-part.com/index.htm

The 6 and 8 cyl cars use a cross-over (transfer) pump that pumps fuel to the other side of the tank, and one pump to the motor.
The STR pumps fuel directly from both sides of the tank to the motor.
The tanks are the same but you don't want to use a 2005 tank. There was a recall on them potentially cracking and leaking fuel.
Recall Summary
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE FUEL TANK MAY HAVE A LOCALIZED THIN WALL SECTION IN THE LOWER HALF OF THE TANK. THE FUEL TANK MAY CRACK CREATING A POTENTIAL FOR A FUEL LEAK AND FUEL ODOR. THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" INDICATOR MAY ILLUMINATE.
Consequence
A FUEL LEAK IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 4, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673, LINCOLN AT 1-800-521-4140.

ZF Transmissions - Fluid alternatives
I have a Lincoln Navigator with the ZF 6HP28 6-speed automatic transmission. I cannot get Ford's recommended ATF fluid, Mercon SP, in the UK. I have read as many internet forums as I could find, and contacted ZF directly. The conclusion I have reached is that ZF's recommended ATF, ZF Lifeguard 6, is the same as Shell M1375.4, is the same as OEM fluids sold by Jaguar, Aston Martin, Bentley, and others that use the ZF 6HP28. ZF publishes a list of European manfactures and their OE ATMs that are the same as LifeGuard 6.
The final link in this is whether these are all the same as Mercon SP. Mercon Sp is available from Ford dealers for less that $5 a quart. All of the fluids listed in the above paragraph are 5x and up more expensive, some up to 30x more expensive.
I can't get Mercon SP shipped to the UK, so I will have to use the Shell or LifeGuard 6 if I can find it (these are only sold by Shell and ZF in 207 drums but there are some companies who break the drums for the retail end user).
But for Jag, Aston and other users of the ZF 6HP28, Mercon SP could be a hugely less expensive AFT. Any more information from readers would be greatly appreciated.

Want the good news or the bad news???
Good news:
They are both the same Visteon (ford OEM) 8" IRS Diff:
LS diff - Same carrier, same axle and taper bearings, same pinion flange should bolt right in.
Bad News: Different gear ratio than the Jaguars. Lincolns never transitioned to the 6speed ZF auto trans, instead, in 03 the Lincolns went from the Ford 5R55N to the Ford 5R55S transmissions, so they kept the final drive different. (except for the post 03 Auto V6 models).
So, tis an interesting dilemma. You can actually give an S-Type, "gears" by swapping in an LS diff, but there are no direct swaps. This may also affect the speedometer and shift points though. Depending on how the S-Type gets its speedo reading, and whether or nor it can be electronically compensated for.
Here are the respective ratios: (I have all the documentation to back this up).
Lincoln LS:
2001-2002 V6 Automatic 3.58:1 Axle tag code 1
2001-2002 V6 Manual 3.07:1 Axle tag code 3
2001-2003 V8 Automatic 3.31:1 Axle Tag code 2
2003-2006 V6 Automatic 3.58:1 Axle Tag Code 554B
2003-2006 V8 Automatic 3.31:1 Axle Tag Code 556B
Jaguar S-Type:
2000-2002 V6 OR v8 3.31.1 Part # XR81871N
2003-08 V6 Automatic 3:31:1 Part # C2C17426
2003 V6 Manual 3.07:1 Part # C2C17425
2003-2008 V8 Automatic 2.87:1 Part # C2C17396
2003-2008 V8 S/C Automatic 2.87:1 Part # C2C17396
So, there is no Direct bolt in option for an STR.. BUT if you don't mind giving it a bit of gear, and we can figure out the speedo, we might actually be able to fix it AND make it faster (insert evil smile here).

No problem man. Anytime.
You know what it made me realize (assuming the trans program part of the swap is possible).
That a V6 diff swap and v6 trans software (to keep the shift points right) would probably put an otherwise bone stock STR in the 12.80 quarter mile range and about 4.8 seconds 0-60, assuming you could keep traction and not just have the tires go up in smoke or the traction control turn the party off.

Ford specifies Mercon SP as the ATF for the 2005-2008 Lincoln Navigator using the ZF6hp26.
Interestingly, If you look at the material data sheet ford filed with the EPA, Ford licenses this fluid and doesn't manufacture it... Although the manufacturer is not listed.
"Produced for the the ford motor company under license".
It's either rebranded shell, or ZF lifefguard 6 itself.
The flash points are listed as different BUT, viscosity is exactly the same, and all the dangerous decomposing products are the same...
Some light reading attached.
Take care,
George

I agree with you, George. Mercon SP looks to be re-branded Lifeguard 6. Or closer to Lifeguard 6 than anything we've found to date. I'll do some more research of course, but I may have just found my replacement ATF whenever 1) my ZF sleeve decides to leak or 2) I decide to change the fluid at 75,000 or so miles....

For non "R" Supercharged Models, all S-Types use the same brake pads as Lincoln LS's and ford Thunderbirds.
Sometimes parts stores are unaware of this, so If you search for the Jag parts they wont cross reference and tell you they don't have anything.
Take care,
Goerge

LS Cats supposed to be a match on the '00-'02 V6
The catalytic converters on my '02 V6 S-type are stamped with the Ford logo. I was getting some codes and thought I would need to replace them. So I called one vendor and they assured me the Ford LS cats fit without modification.
I did not actually end up replacing them (yet). So I cannot confirm this, but since the ones on the car have the Ford logo (and some part numbers on them too) I am pretty certain the LS cat will work.
