Default Could ABS/Traction fault cause hot wheel.

Hi my first post here. I've read various threads which are a great help but they dont exactly cover my situation. Just bought a 1999 S Type 3L V6 manual. Got the following lights permanently on ABS, Traction control fault, Traction Dynamic control and Brake. When I got home after buying the car one of the back wheels was very hot and smelling of brake pad. My first thought was stuck brake caliper causing the hot wheel but on jacking up its not solid but running almost as free as the other back wheel which is ok.
So where do I start trying to remedy this lot. And could a fault with the ABS/Traction control be telling the the brakes to be applied to one rear wheel all the time while I'm driving, to cause the hot wheel. Or could it still be a faulty brake caliper even though its not stuck solid by any means. Meaning I've got a faulty brake caliper and a separate ABS/Traction control fault? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
So like I said could the hot wheel and ABS/Traction control fault be all the same fault?
PS After speaking to previous owner he says always had a problem with handbrake adjustment so the Brake warning light could be a separate problem which I'm not too worried about if thats the case.

Thanks
Chris

If the wheels hot then there is a wheel bearing or brake caliper issue. I don't believe an ABS fault will lead to squeezing the caliper. Allow a competent mechanic to inspect the brakes.

Since your ABS and traction control lights are on they are not working so I would look for a simple mechanical problem like bfsgross suggested.

You could get the ABS codes read. Any code tends to disable it so I don't think it'll cause the heat. A failing bearing may well be the cause but better diagnosis is needed.

Out of interest are the jaguar code readers for £30-£40 on Ebay upto the job rather than paying a garage more, for one visit?

Thanks

You don't need one labelled Jaguar unless you want a rather better one than those.
(There are specialist ones but they cost much more. The ones you've seen just happen to mention Jag but are likely no better than the generic ones.) A standalone one will be £15 or so.

Even the slightest residual friction will cause a hot caliper. If it was the ABS or DSC there'd be no mistaking it with noise from the former and warning lights from the latter.

Start with the parking brake mechanism, make sure that's free.

You'll have to bare with me, I might be asking stupid questions but....is the Traction control fault warning, a separate fault from the ABS warning light or are they part of the same? Or, is the possible sticking caliper/wheel bearing (causing the hot wheel) causing the Traction control fault and the ABS fault is a separate issue?

Thanks
Chris

Two separate, independent systems. There is a fault warning if either has a problem and an indicator light if the DSC is activated while driving or is turned off by the driver.
