Current X-Type owner thinking of S Type
Good afternoon. I currently drive a 2003 X-Type and found a 2007 S Type 3.0 Premium Package with 47K for $12,989. The price seems to be in-line with KBlueBook. I would appreciate any information on areas of concern with this vehicle. I really like my X-Type, because of the styling and AWD and will keep that vehicle. Any and all assistance and comments are appreciated! Thanks and have a safe and an enjoyable Holiday Season.

I went from a bad X-speriance with an X-type sport to the S-type Sport and all I can say is wow.

Hello Bill in Wooster.
Not to much reported on the 2006 MYs so far as they must be holding up quite well. There are a handful of problems that plague the 2005 MY but are pretty easily remedied and are DIY friendly. Take a look in the "How To" guide here at the top of the forum.
The 3.0 is a pretty bullet proof engine and we (wifey and I) are happy with it. Great mileage and has plenty of kick for her.
The price stated doesn't sound that bad either.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Just be very hard with the price. The S Type can't be given away so they won't have anybody else looking at it.
I would say under $10K. Give them a Christmas offer and sit back and wait. They most certainly want that car gone by the end of the year so they don't have to pay tax on it. I bet when it gets a few days until January 1 they will deal!
Check the completed sales on EBay to get a better idea. Here is a 2007 V-8 with 70K that sold for $10,500.

I used the same hard-ball strategy recommended above when I decided to chase our 2005 S-Type at this same time of year in 2008. There were zero customers besides my wife and myself for the entire three hours we were kicking tires and test-driving. I knew if I held firm I could grab this car for a steal and that's what I wound up doing the next morning. My biggest challenge was keeping my wife from showing her enthusiasm for the car. Once I sent her home and removed her from the equation, all the factors were on my side - no other customers, year-end approaching, and having the cash in hand....

I looked at several cars before in the used market where I've waited until the dealer lowers the price, played hardball with no haggle dealers, etc. and then when price gets close to where I want it - "poof" somebody else bought it. Name of the game with used cars, it's a crap shoot. There is always someone who shows up on a lot and needs a car today, and doesn't over think anything.
These days when I see a good deal, I just go for it. Think I bought my S-Type after looking at it for 45 minutes, I had to be somewhere else later. Like you, I didn't need another car to drive. I might regret it later, but doubt it.
I don't think EBay is a good indication of what cars are worth though. Lots of other factors involved, Ebay buyers are not your typical car buyer.

EBay is an excellent price source. Nation wide and well documented. The problem with buying cars is it's a very uneven match.
You, the consumer who only buy a few cars in a lifetime against a dealer who sells cars everyday. You are really out of your league the minute you step onto a car lot whether you know it or not!!
It's like the old saying about playing poker. There is always a patsy in the game. Look around the table and if you can't identify the patsy then guess what?? You are the patsy and are about to get skinned!

When I purchased my STR from Studio City in Los Angeles, there were 5 active leads on the car, two of which were going to drive from Lake Arrowhead to pick up the car. Now granted it was an STR - 1 owner, clean carfax and 43k miles, but I think when they start dipping below $12k people perk up. There was a 2003 STR in Palo Alto, CA that had 56k miles 2 owners I think that did $10,800 in fair/good condition. I picked up my 1st STR (pic enclosed) back in 2010/11 for $9.5 with 88k miles one owner and a newly rebuilt tranny. Drove it for about 10k miles loved that car but the A/C was failing and in FL it wasn't ideal.

In any case, I got my 2006 S-Type with 38K miles for $9.9K at a local lot - and I doubt I could find one on Ebay like that. When I want to compare prices, I use cars.com instead and do a nationwide search to put things in perspective.
