The $179 CTEK works no better than the $30 Battery Tenders.
Again- no tender of any type will work if it's plugged into the lighter socket. It needs to be attached directly to the battery.

I think this is the connection direct to the battery, which would mean it was HOT.

I think your right, it looks like the "cigarette lighter" plug goes into the DIN socket which is hooked up to the battery and the unit get's plugged in to the mains.
I'm sure tai4de2 will let us know.

About $5.00 gets a nice one.
With the water resistant cover, it could even be mounted on the bottom lip of the bumper.
Also makes a nice auxillary power port.

I took a simpler (to me) route with our S-type. The battery tender I linked to above comes with two sets of leads, with a quick disconnect plug. One set of leads has alligator clips on the end, the other has eyelets. I permanently installed the lead with eyelets on the battery cables which was maybe a five minute job. When not sitting with the tender attached, the cable sits on the floor of the boot pushed out of the way. I use the other set of leads with clips to top up the batteries for the boat, tractor etc.

I know this thread is not about F-Types, but as a data point the F-Type doesn't come with a battery conditioner socket; a battery conditioner kit has to be ordered and installed. The kit is 2 distinct parts.
The wiring harness/socket: one end gets permanently connected to the battery. The other end is a socket which is *not* a standard cigarette lighter receptacle, which confused me at first. To use the charger, I had to remove a red sleeve from the tip of the plug, which I previously didn't even realize was removable. (I don't know whether the socket could provide power as well as support the conditioning function's inbound power flow; I suspect the different socket indicates not, and is intended to prevent someone from damaging the battery or car by inadvertently trying.)
The charger: has the Jaguar brand on it but from what I can tell it is absolutely identical to the unbranded CTK one I already had in my garage from a previous vehicle. I could have saved the money and just ordered the wiring harness.
Pictures in this thread, including of the charger tip with the red sleeve I mentioned above.
Hope that helps.

Does appear that there's simpler and less expensive options though.
