Dead Cat... sometimes
I am a new Jaguar owner and it's been a rough start... I have a 2000 Jaguar S-type 4.0, and am looking for some help. I have searched the forums but have not found anything similar to my symptoms.
My jag starts very easily most of the time, and consistently with the same amount of revolutions (maybe one). But sometimes I will get in the car, put the key in and start to turn it and the power goes dead like somebody pulled the battery cable off. No energy - anywhere. When it comes back on the clock is reset even.
Most of the time if I open the hood and close it (drop from about 8 inches) the head lights will flash and within a few seconds the alarm goes off and the car has full power again.
This only happens when I am trying to start the car, and to this point never dies once the car is started.
The battery cables are solidly connected and corrosion free. I see nothing loose in the engine compartment. I feel like it is security system related - but dropping the hood doesn't fit. It also feels like it is a short - but only happening when I try to start the car doesn't fit. Being new to Jags I am hoping that somebody here has experienced the same symptoms.
Any ideas?

If it's not the battery it could be any of a lot of things (sorry!). Such as chafed/corroded wire, intermittent power/ground/fuse/relay. Relays are easy to swap around or replace the few that are unique. Fuses ditto. (Not sure on yours but mine has 3 separate fuse boxes - see handbook.)
Other thing to check would be amps drawn when it won't start in case it's a short - leave it for long and expect a fire
