Default Dead in the water

greetings, I have a 2000 s-type, looks pretty but stopped running, just quit. Only thing that works is the radio and powerseats. nothing else works. battery good, belt is tight, turn the key, nadda, no lights, no horn, no windows, no fan, no anything? Any ideas?

Jagbreder is on the right track. Check power from the battery to chassis, etc. There is def. an issue from the battery to power distribution...not as complicated as you may think...you'll be surprised as to how simple the solution...check your connections.

Thank you Jag Breeder and bfsgross. I checked battery to chassis, I have good voltage. I checked voltage in luggage compartment fuse for ignition and got a good reading also. I don't have a digital meter but the needle jumped right up to twelve volts. Jiggled all the exposed wires from the battery and fuse box, inspected for any obvious signs of burn, corrosion, brittle, nothing, all seems good in the trunk.

I'm still sensing power distribution relay/fuse, security shutdown, etc..... Try touching the negative cable to the attached positive battery terminal (hard re-set). You may send a PM to Brutal (Jag Tech)

Ok, I'll try that tomorrow morning. As I'm brand new to this how do contact Brutal, and by PM do you mean evening time? I'm real good with my hands but way behind on my computer skills. Thanks again

Check for a loose positive cable connection at the Starter as well.

Would that also effect everything else in the car except the radio and power seats? Nothing works. The windows are down, the skylight is open, can;t close them, no headlights, turn signals, horn, turnsignals, flashers, nothing works. Car just died one block from house.

Did you have a looksie in the spare tire well for water? The trunk seals are known for allowing water to accumulate down in there.

The radio has power but nothing else...? As Joyces jag says, check trunk for rust on terminals and intrusion on power modules/distribution. Also as previous member says; starter to battery cables.

only had a little time due to work and rain ( the car is outside). The trunk is dry, ever had any water in it. did the negative lead contact with the positive post of battery, no change. Can't get to starter yet, maybe tomorrow if it doesn;t rain and i can jack it up. where are these power modules I'm to check? My 64 E-type with positive ground and lucas electric was easier than this. I like this car, i'm just baffled.

It'll all pan-out. Don't worry. Walk away from it, get some rest then start fresh. You'll be surprised at how simple the problem is.

Its not going to be a connection to the starter. That doesnt explain ALL the power being out. that only explains why it wont start. It sounds like you have a bad connection to a power distribution block or some kind of blown fuse/relay like bfsgross said.

Possible security problem, but since ive never had it happen im not sure what it locks out from working besides the starter. You can always use your spare key to see if maybe your chip in your key went bad?

Hmm.. reading this could it be a bad ignition switch? Doesn't that switch basically turn everything on... Since power seats are always on and the radio is on as an accessory until you open the doors (If I recall) they may not be affected. And.... aren't the switches known to be a hassle?

Shoot Jeff, I didn't think about the key or ignition switch. Good thought pattern.

You know something, that was one of my first thoughts but the radio threw me. Now I need to figure how to get up to the ignition to test it. I took the panel off below it and there appears to be a frame member of some kind in the way. It looks like it goes behind the center panel with the radio. I really appreciate all this help folks.

Hi - Had similar problem with mine, sometimes all signs were there but no starter turning ??? by switching the key on and off vigorously it would then kick in. I sprayed the ignition key barrel with contact cleaner several times whilst moving the key and lots of yukky cr-p washed out - I then lubricated it with WD40 and again switched on - off loads. It went well for a couple of days then did it again I repeated all the above and it has not done it since, and it has now been months. Worth a try

I would agree definately worth a try try looking at the ignition lock barrel - there is a small shutter on the keyhole that jams - if it does not open and close properly the car thinks it is an alarm state and activates the immobiliser
Some spray it with WD40 but graphite is better for a long term fix

Could also be the switches on transmission that are saying the car is not in park = no start....
