Deadlocks activating on drive away

I bought my 2006 2.7 recently and have had a number of problems/incidents with the locks - including all doors locking while key was in ignition - and I was outside the car.
But my main problem is that the drive away locking function deadlocks the doors meaning that neither the passenger nor driver's door handle will unlock the car. I can unlock it with the central locking switch but in an emergency that may not be feasible.
It isn't absolutely consistent - happens about 75% of the journeys. Any ideas?

It's odd. When deadlocked, that central switch is ignored (otherwise what would be the point!). Except... at the time you have the key in, so maybe then it wouldn't be ignored even on a working car.
It's as if yours is seeing a double pulse when normally only one would occur, and thus deadlocking instead of simply locking.
Locking when closing a door is not that rare and may be a dodgy microswitch or wiring.
The door with the most wear is the driver's so usually the offender.

Welcome to the forum toshy,
Automatically deadlocking is very unusual and potentially very dangerous. I agree with JagV8 that the driver's doorlock microswitch is a likely culprit. These have caused a variety of faults on various Jaguar models of the same era.
Now for some good news - if it is the microswitch, they are available separately.

Thanks for all your suggestions - as I said the problem is not consistent. Sometimes the passenger door will unlock from inside - but only if passenger tries before I switch off ignition. Sometimes it works either way.
have noticed that OSR door doesn't always lock. Could that be source of problem? How would I eliminate without stripping both OS door linings to expose locks?
