deal or no deal?
i'm looking @ a 03 str with 86k miles on it going for about $16,000. owner says that it was well maintained and the car looks to be in great condition and has an existing factory warranty until 100k miles. that price is mighty tempting, but is it worth it? what type of problems start popping up at such high milage or in the near future? also, how pricey is the maintenance for these beauties especially as they begin to age? thanx for any input...

NO Deal....I don’t know how much driving you do, but you only have 13K left on the warranty. Jaguars are very expensive when they brake down and are costly just for routine maintenance. I have no idea what the life is of the supercharger, but sooner or later it will need to be replaced. Personally it has too many miles for me, did you happen to read about frombeztojag’s acquisition? Do a quick search and find out what he paid for his STR.

That STR with 86K Miles with no Navi in Florida should be bought for $12500 outright no more than $13500. Thats what makes a deal. I wouldnt buy it. I paid basically $15500 for my STR with 65K Miles, Navi, and Select Edition Warranty plus a pair of free Michelin Tires $800 which was included. I subtracted what I actually paid minus my freebies buying privatley. Out the Door Price was $16500 tax incl - my freebies included that I sold = $15500 Out The Door with Tax for an 2003 STR with 65K Miles, with Navi, and Select Edition Warranty good to Oct 08. What a deal.

I personally have never heard of the supercharger going bad. I don't think our dealer has ever replaced one. The seals may leak, but the supercharger seems to be the most trouble free part Jag has ever made.
And frombenztojagtobenztoheadlampdestroyers aquisition of his supposed S-Type R is a rarity. The average person will not find a car like that.

frombenz2jag truly is an apparition when it comes to Jaguar prices. I think it's a good deal and you can't expect too much so little either. At 86K miles, expect some rudimentary maintenance, but if you drive it nicely and keep it well maintained, you should be fine. Just try to extend your warranty...at all costs. S-type R's can get quite pricey in the maintenance department.
