Default Did My First Oil & Filter Change Yesterday

Although I always have fun learning about working on a new (to me) vehicle the first time I crawl around underneath it, I'm still shaking my head about the wisdom of placing the oil filter in a spot where shielded hoses (I assume they are fuel lines) run directly underneath it. Couldn't remove the filter with my spanner wrench because there wasn't enough working room to use the handle to turn it. Couldn't use my filter removal cap attached directly to my socket wrench because the hoses were in the way. Finally decided to thread a 12-inch extension through the hoses, plug it into the cap, and work with my socket wrench a good 16 inches away from the tip of the filter. Distance leads to tool wiggle which leads to a greater chance of crushing the filter and causing the cap to lose grip and thereby making it very difficult to get the filter off.

Still love the car, but really despise this oil filter set-up. Even though I figured it out without having to buy more tools, it will still be a hassle every time.

Anybody out there have a better way?

^^i sense disapproval norri

I don't do mine either, but I do allow a 'quick' lube-type shop to do my changes, and maybe new wiper blades. That's about all I'll let them touch... oh, and my air pressure, they do that for me too (sometimes they mess it up however)

Lol you should see the setup on the 4.2.. the filter and drain plug are literally 6" away from each other and are right on the very bottom of the engine.. I timed my last oil change and it took me 9 minutes from start to finish. I always use Motorcraft filters and Mobil 1 5W-30..

How long are the rest of you going in between oil changes?? sometimes I only go 3k miles, but other time not till 5k of even 7k??? but this pig also takes almost 7 quarts so it gets kinda pricey to change it all the time..

I'm on a 4000 mile interval, sometimes I miss it by a few hundred miles since I don't keep the dorky sticker up on the windsheild, not flattering on a vert

On all of my cars, its 1/2 of the manufactures recommended interval. So for the stypeR, its every 5k miles with 0W30 and either bosch or factory filters.

7 qts is a lot but at least the 0W30 from mobil comes in 5 qt containers and available at Wal-mat for about $22. I have another that takes 9 qts of 0W40 that you can only buy in 1 qt containers from the auto part stores (9x$6.99) which gets really expensive and another that takes 7 qts of 0W30 but the interval is 3750 miles. So the Jag's not cheap but pretty reasonable for a modern car and 7qt seems to be the std with extended oil change interval cars.

FYI: Mobil 1 has a $10 rebate for 5qt starting from 4/1 on their website due to some weather related supply issues.

I did this first oil & filter change at a 6,000-mile interval. The service guide says to do it every 10,000 miles, but that's a bit extreme in my book unless you're running full synthetic which I don't. I'll change the oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles just like I do with our two other vehicles. I'm sticking with Jaguar's recommendation of Castrol 5W-30 conventional oil. When it's on sale at Wal-Mart or Advance Auto Parts or Pep Boys, it's half the price of synthetic and it certainly protects my warranty, extended or otherwise. My 3.0 engine took exactly 7 quarts. I've used Purolator filters for decades so that's what I put in the S-Type as well. The old filter I removed was Jaguar - who makes it? I would guess Wix....

I would love more information on the Jaguar and Bosch oil filter. I was going to change my own oil, but after adding $25.00 for the filter, another $30.00 for the oil, and $5.00 for the plug. It is better to just go to the dealer and pay $75.00. I looked up a Bosch filter @ Auto Zone and there wasn't one listed for the 4.2 S-Type.

9 minutes Eric?? I did mine in 8 1/2min. Lol J/k I go about 5k between oil changes... and yes I do have the dorky little sticker on my window to remind me. Contrary to what you may think (and I know you will all be shocked to know) I do NOT do my own oil changes. I also do not go to jiffy lube instead I let the dealership take full advantage of me and my wallet and have them do it! Don't you guys just love when the women on this site put their two sense in???

Dude you are awesome! You have just answered my question to this date on the Bosch oil filter. That is exactly what my jag wholesaler and repair tech sold me; Bosch 72209 oil filter for $8. lOlz...you guys got it cheaper than me , dunno if you had to pay for shipping, but I got it for $8 even. Also he recommended me that he has an Air filter by Cooper which is very least the same as the OEm that Jag dealer sells. Plus since he's a jag repair tech, He's charging me $20 to do the oil change , I just have to bring him the oil filter and Full synthetic oil from Walmart 0w30 or 5w30 Mobil 1, dunno yet which one to choose. Heard Ow30 gives better gas milage, Anyone noticed any difference using it???

My 03' Jag at the moment is giving me 25mpg on the Highway so far, so anyhow Please give your advice on the Air filter if the brand Cooper is any good?

Thanks
