Bought the car like this. I was going to pound it out and use bondo, but that seemed like so much work, so I went to a u-pick and snagged a good fender for 40 bucks.
The tools. I was told at the bodyshop supplier that Jag colours are such high quality and so consistent and stable, much better to just use the book formula rather than taking a scan off the car itself. We compared the new paint they mixed to the old, and I couldn't see any difference.
The fender I got from the wreckers. Sanded with 600 and cleaned with reducer before shooting.
Base coat drying.
Just waiting for the clearcoat to fully harden before mounting the fender. Looks pretty damn good for a noob. I'm really glad I have the tools to be able to do this stuff; it's a lot of fun. It seems to me though, that the car has faded to a very slight turqouis tint compared to the new paint. Won't be able to tell until it's in place, but if so I'll have to blend it in by shooting the door as well. Jag paints are very stable so I might get lucky.
Paint job looks perfect! Are you going to paint rocker panels? Let me guess, previous owner went to mental institution? Who painted mice and red rocker panels?
Most paints have different shades (2-4) of the same paint code. I usually spend at least 10 min trying to choose right shade before ordering. Paint guy wouldn't even take my order until I tell him which shade.
Different shades are marked by a letter:
"L" lighter
"D" darker
"R" reddish
"Y" yellowish
and so on.
HAHAHAHAH you guys are hilarious. That was me, and no, I'm not institutionalized. I love Jag styling and performance but don't like the semiotics of high end cars, and what better way to take the pretension out of it than by referencing Banksy? I love the guy's art, and I only paid $1300 for the car, so I can do pretty much what I want with it.
I get a LOT of thumb's up for the car, a lot more so than if I was just driving another old man's beige, of which there are plenty in this town.
And that's not all:
Even my wife thinks it's awesome and fights with me over who gets to take the Jag to work.
