I have another idea for breaking loose those stubborn bolts. Now I'm not about to tear the front end apart just to see if this would work, but maybe the next guy could try it and report back.
Once you're ready to loosen those bolts, turn the steering wheel full travel one direction or the other. The knuckles will of course turn, and I think the angle will now let you use a big long breaker bar for leverage, with no restriction of having to fit in the fender well. With the front end off the ground, you should be able to easily turn the steering wheel.
I recently learned US cars do not have a steering column lock, so no problem there. If you live elsewhere and need to unlock the steering column, simply insert the key in the ignition lock. You don't have to even turn the key, just insert it. That should unlock the steering column.
I'll be waiting with bated breath for somebody to try this and let us know if it worked.

Ooh, forgot to include an important warning if using a slide hammer to separate a hub assembly from the knuckle, as suggested in post #20 above.
Only use a slide hammer if discarding the hub. If removing a good hub and planning to re-install it, such as if replacing a damaged knuckle, do NOT use a slide hammer. You could flat spot the bearings inside the hub, because of the shock applied. Not a problem if the hub is being discarded, but potentially dangerous if it is to be re-installed.
