Default DIY Brake Job Doable?

One of the items noted by the mechanic that checked out my S-type was that the new brake pads were installed without the rotors being turned. So basically, the first 10% of the pads are toast from the beginning. I was wondering if this is something that I can do. I have done numerous break jobs over the years but did not know if Jag's are unique in some manner that I may not be expecting.

Also, I was wondering if replacing the stock rotors with the vented version is advisable? At 33k miles, do I need to do anything special to the calipers?

thanks,
Chris

I replaced all the rotors and pads myself, and that was the first brake job I have ever done to any car. I didn't know what to expect other than JTIS instructions and googling around (the rear calibers have to be rotated to be pushed back in).

In all the years that I did brake jobs for a big fleet, it was rare that we turned the rotors. Usually it was only the big trucks' drums got turned because they get cracks and out of round.

If your rotors are not worn to the replacement thickness and don't have slots cut by rivets then you can get away with it. One of the big, well know car mags answered a tech question by saying that they didn't machine the rotors on the long term test cars. Get a micrometer for brakes if you are going to do your own more than once.

Some jobs are money makers for service outfits.

Agreed. When my rotors are still clean, smooth, and shiny, I simply replace the worn-out brake pads and just keep rolling down the road. Never had a rotor issue yet after doing this....

i invested in a set of brake tools from harbor freight to make the calipers rotate while being pushed in, it paid for itself after just one pad replacement.

Turning / machining the rotors ( discs ) is an American thing I suspect.....Its not something i've really heard of over here in the UK. Generally speaking I expect possibly 2-3 sets of pads to a set of rotors, depending on driving style obviously.....basically I agree wth Jon on this.

I don't think that a brake job is really that hard to do, even if you haven't done it before...

Here's an awesome vid from the FAQ's...do yourself a favour and check it out

I replaced my brake pads this summer with ceramic pads and it was a breeze. It was actually my first brake job on any car too. I rented a caliper tool set and it was worth every penny for working on the brakes.

Just go for it! (after watching the vid JimC64 suggested of course!)

I saw this and thought I would lend an encouraging word. Yes, the brakes are easy to do.. So I also figured I'd link a thread I started about my brake job...

Here it is.. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...t=11525&page=2

My own thread actually floored me! I put those brakes on my car two years before I traded it in, to the day! I traded it with those pads and rotors still on it and still with plenty of life left. I've never gotten TWO YEARS out of a set of brakes before...NEVER.. I'm an animal on brakes.

That said, I'm going to get the same stuff for the 300.. I hate the brakes that are on it now..And they are "new"..

Royalty is still around.. http://www.royaltyrotors.com/about.htm

The only disclaimer or warning I have is under heavy braking they make this crazy whirring sound... Like a fan... But after two years of abuse they never warped or cracked (the common complaint with drilled rotors). The only thing the Jag needed was a brake fluid flush since the pedal had gotten a little mushy..but at 70k miles that is to be expected.....

Let the "you don't know what your talking about" bashing begin.... All I can say, is that set held up better than anything I've ever installed on any vehicle I've ever owned... I didn't even realize how good they were..
