Default DTC Codes

Hi, i am getting a few codes thrown at me.
P0308 , P1314 , P1316 , P1647 , P0782
Does anyone see a pattern in these. Maybe have tips for culprits?
I did get a tranny oil service. Do i need anything else as well?
Thanks

You could always look them up in the workshop manual Here is a link:

It looks to me like more than one fault to me and only P0782 is gearbox related. (You will not like what is in the manual about this fault!)

A little background please. Are these new codes out of the blue? Been there a while? Any drivability problems? Any recent work other than the transmission service?

I would suggest concentrating on P0308 to start. The other codes may be secondary faults, even the one for the transmission.

Here is the official Jaguar list of codes. Follow this, NOT the definition your scanner says for a particular code:

http://jagrepair.com/images/AutoRepa..._OBD_II_R2.pdf

P1316 only appears in conjunction with a misfire code, and means the misfire problem is severe enough to cause catalyst damage. The check engine light will typically flash to get your attention. Do NOT drive the car like this, or you risk melting a converter, an expensive proposition.

While on the subject, time for me to get on MisfireSoapbox(tm):

If the computer has set a misfire code, please be aware "misfire" wasn't the best terminology that could have been used. Misfire sounds like an ignition problem, at least to me, meaning the fuel and compression were there, but for whatever reason, the required spark was missing or weak. This might lead a good-looking aspiring mechanic to troubleshoot the daylights out of a perfectly good ignition system. I do not care to discuss how I know this.

In OBD-speak, misfire simply means one or more cylinders is putting out low power compared to the others. Pretty much anything affecting the output of a cylinder can set a misfire code. It can be low compression. It can be a valve not opening fully. It could be a bad fuel injector. And yes, it could be an ignition problem, too, but don't overlook the other possibilities, too. [/soapbox mode off]

Back to P0308, you could start by swapping that coil with another cylinder and then see if the fault follows the coil or stays with #8 cylinder.

Its been a while since they are present. I would say the car is terrible on a cold start, rough idle, very shaky reverse when the temp is between 1/4-1/2, the shifts are little weird too when cold, again between 1/4-1/2 temp it seems like it struggles to get through past 70-80kmph like something is not letting the car to go faster, but eventually it gets through it and then the symptom disappears. Also after the tranny fluid change and car seemed react better but then a week later it was back to how it was kind of. Maybe it needs some reset so it learns again? I get restricted performance from time to time usually goes away but it happens some time after, i would say its pretty random when it kicks in.

Ill let you know about the coil change, i only really have time to do anything with the car during weekend.

Please keep us posted. If you confirm the coil is bad, make sure to get a quality name brand replacement. Stay away from the no-name replacements you might find on eBay, etc. Very dismal reliability. Many forum members have found out the hard way.

Just to note that you may already know this but, the temp gauge in the S-type is a ‘pseudo’ gauge it is just there to make you think the engine is running at a constant temp. It does not show the actual engine temperature at all but will just stay at ½ way for a very wide range of actual water temperatures.

I absolutely agree swapping the coil to see if the code follows is the first step.
That said, a few years ago I got a similar raft of codes and symptoms (ignoring the gearbox code for the moment) and in the end it turned out to be the filters inside the fuel pumps being full of gunk. I have a post on how I cleaned it somewhere....
The gearbox code may be nothing or it could be ugly (I experienced ugly). Good luck with it!

Yes be sure and clear all codes and see what comes back before doing any repairs.
