Default Electronic handbrake

2007 S Type R 45k miles

i had to call out my vehicle recovery service the other day because my electronic brake had locked on and wouldn't release.
They disconnected the battery, waited 10 minutes and then re calibrated the brake having reconnected the battery.
All was well until I stopped the car and ignition turned off. Brake was locked on again.
what can I do to repair this problem.
Cheers
Rob

Check battery volts as per the many threads as most likely by far is it's getting low.

Be sure, because the parts of the EPB such as the motor are very hard to change...

Many thanks...JagV8
the battery is the original Jaguar badges one which will now be 10 years old. I have assumed because it starts well, the battery must be OK

i don't know if it's connected but the airbag light (far right on dash) flickers intermittently before remaining on until ignition off

cheers

That's why you should read the threads.

Have looked but can't find a thread that refers specifically to my problem. Plenty on low voltage batteries and the implications but I would have thought mine is ok as it turns the engine over so well.

Thanks
Not sure about how to determine percentage of charge..... I use a CTEK conditioning charger during low use periods and that might have contributed to the
Lifespan of the original battery.
Having read about the importance of a good battery, I will get a new one on payday and see if that helps sort out the EPB and airbag warning light which flickers quite randomly before staying on permanently.

Have you got a code reader because if the battery is not holding enough charge you will have loads of them.

Default Just fitted new battery

Yesterday, I fitted a new correct spec Exide battery hoping to solve the EPB lock up problem.

having fitted it I did the EPB recallibration (in the same way that the Recovery mechanic did so I could drive car home) but this time it will not release to allow me to drive it into my garage and onto my pit so I can check out the relevant mechanics and the EPB motor. Looks like I will have to jack the rear end up (on the gravel....not ideal)

Any thoughts about releasing brake appreciated.

cheers

Rob

What happens if you press the gas pedal with the car in drive?

Remove a rear wheel and see if there's any motion at all on the EPB cables when applying/releasing the EPB. If there's no motion or no signs of the motor struggling, then I think you've got an electronic problem.

Many thanks Mike.
i will investigate as you suggest.... I can hear an attempt to move something at the rear end so I am hoping that I can find something to lubricate and free.
cheers again

There is a procedure for releasing the EPB on the forum.
The EPB module is in the boot.

Unplug the bottom connection of the epb module in the trunk. There should be four connections to that connector. One is green with white and another orange with white. Run lead to the battery geniales to those two connections briefly. Reverse polarity to rub epb in opposite direction i.e. release or engage. Did this exact same thing in my XJR this weekend. As far as why your epb is getting sick I don't know. Could be your pads are too worn and is causing the epb actuator to over extend. Just a guess. Or maybe position sensor failure. Mine got stuck after I replaced pads and not calibrating the calipers.

If you are in an area of salt use the cables could be the problem?

Is it correct that the EPB motor and cables can only be removed by detaching and lowering the subframe?
Hope not!

No.

Access depends on car model but is at best tough.

Obviously anyone contemplating this will have checked the (free) workshop manual & TSBs, plus existing threads which sometimes have pictures...

That's what we have been told. With my car on a lift it's a very tight fit to even get my hand up and around the EPB motor.

BUT with as much Hell it is to drop the sub frame I would spend a few hours trying to do it without dropping the sub frame. Has your car ever been in salt? That would add to the work in removing it and be prepared for some broken bolt problems.

I don't think anyone had done it that way but hope someone has and will jump in!

So far all my EPB problems have been fixed with the re-calibration procedure and I don't drive in salt.
