Which engine more reliable V6 or V8?

Which engine more reliable V6 or V8?
I'm shopping online for an S-TYPE 03 or newer. Most have the 3.0L V6 while some have the 4.2L V8. Which one is better. Which one is more reliable? Is there a big difference on gas MPG? According to MSN's auto site the MPG is the same for both engines which makes no sense. Most say the V6 is surprisingly fast off the line, but is the V8 even better by far, or not really? And most importantly is one engine more reliable than the other? I'm probably going to be putting a lot of miles on it. Thanks!

3.0 V6 is very fast engine! I have 3.0 V6 Automatic! I am very happy with it! I have driven 4.0 V8 and extremly powerfull R!!!
As of 4.0 V8 is I would say a "little" big difference betwen it and V6! V6 is less complicated and you have 25-30% more gas milage! As of performance as I sad difference is 20-25%!!!
So it is your choise,as me,I would go for V6! No need for V8! V6 is also powerfull...only one thing....from 0-30km/h you can spin the wheels and from 30-250km/h (250km/h danger because it suppoused to go 235km/) car goes like hell!!! Difference 0-30-...km/h V8 growls!!!

I have a 4.0 V8 2001. It is fast as hell. It has very good pickup. With traction control offI can spin my tires by pressing the throttle just a little. I would get the 4.2. Buying a Jag, you really should not worry how much MPG you get. The difference in MPG will be significant however. But why a V6? There are plenty V6s on the market. Your better off getting an Altima or Maxima. I would go all out regardless of it being an everyday car. Just my opinion

RE: Which engine more reliable V6 or V8?
My S-Type-R gets 15 in city and 28 on the highway if I don't pass people like maniac doing 100mph. For an engine that powerful, the fuel economy is great.
My parents have a 2000 S-Type with the 4.0 V8 and it too is a powerful engine with decent fuel economy. The engines have proven reliable in both of our S-Types....it's everything else built around the engine that has problems. Less so in the 03's and newer.
But for gas mileage and engine reliability....i doubt there's much diff. The V8 is economical when you want it to be, and powerful when you need it to be. I wouldn't waste the money on a V6 S-Type even if it was being sold at half its value. It just wouldn't be the same car.
But everyone has different priorities and preferences. My S-Type R is a little too powerful for daily driving, but you get used to it. The naturally aspriated 4.2L V8 would be just right for daily driving, and plenty reliable/efficient....IMHO.

Well I think that boils it down to a V8 4.2L. I know of one person that has an 03 "R" for sale with 75K for $14,000 but the R may be an overkill for me? I am going from a Hyundai Elantra 4 banger which gets close to 30mpg in the CITY so the "r" would be cutting it in half.

a hyndai elantra to a jag s-type r? That is a huge JUMP!!! Who are you Evil Kenieval??? The difference in acceleration andhandling alone will knock your socks off.Forget gas mileage, thesecars are on opposite sides of the spectrum. One is economical for practical life, the other one according to a Top Gear episode describe the 4.2 Litre as "a nuclear bomb under the bonnet"

Yes I have driven one as a loaner when my jag needed some work done at the dealership. It is FAST. Trust me.

They gave you another Jag to drive much less an R??? Consider yourself lucky! When I have to leave my car for service they arrange a rental car for me (they pay for it) and it usually smells like smoke, is dirty and is not even close to a Jaguar. Last time I had a Dodge wagon type car and the ground effects on the whole passenger side was ripped off and it was sooo dirty inside! [:'(]Makes you appreciate your car so much more when you get it back!

BTW, It was a Jag dealership and all the ford focuses were taken. So they gave me the R as a loaner. It was a 2007 I think. This was back in June before I left for vacation in Arizona.
PS I went skydiving in Arizona. I posted that under your NEW thread "summer memories"
