Engine Shut Down while driving

Engine Shut Down while driving
Hi,
I own 2001 Jaguar s-type v8 and yesterday when I was driving on highway, the engine just shut down with no warnings. I, first, thought it was a battery problem, but my friends and I tried jumping the car, but it would not do anything. When I turn the ignition key, the engine make a click sound once and that's it. It sounds like it locked or something like that. Then I remembered that my engine light came on day before that, so I checked my oil and it was a bit low. So I put more oil in and tried again, but it still make that click noise once and thats it. My radio and everything else runs fine, so it might not be battery problem. But I am not sure, so has anybody gone through this before or can you suggest something that can help me out? Thanks you very much and any help appreciated.

Remove all coils carefully make sure you DO NOT damage any of the 8 plugs make note where each coil goes. If you notice any of the boots look wet DO NOT continue.
IF AND ONLY IF all the boots are DRY. proceed to carefully remove each spark plug make note where it goes.
One the coils and spark plugs are removed pull the ignition fuse.
Crank the car if it rotates count your blessings you might not be so lucky next time.
If it will not rotate check voltage to the battery try to jump start attaching the jumper cables DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY NOT THE AUX POST UNDER THE HOOD.
If it rotates again count your blessings you got lucky.
Doesn't rotate...... I'm sorry to share you have seized the motor from lack of lubrication.
Good luck!

Wow, talk about scaring the cr*p out of the guy.
It's unlikely the engine would seize with no warning- Low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, clattering, banging etc. He said that his 'engine light' was on the day before, not at the time of the shutdown.
Pretty hard to diagnose these types of things over the ultraweeb.

Saying you added 5qts and calling it a bit low is awfully optimistic. I'd definitely run through the ignition as Mafioso suggested, but considering the lack of oil you should brace yourself for something more serious. It's a case of being ready for the worst, but hoping for the best. I know I am.

I feel sorry for the guy and when reading the response by Mafioso thought wow, not fooling around here and right to the point (but isn't it how it should be sometimes with the saying "just cut to the chase"), but when I read he had to add 5 quarts of oil. A little low!!!!! Sorry to say this but with the year I am having and then reading the engine light going on the day before and not thinking I better check all the common things I can do right away before I drive the car another 10 feet and instead kept driving, not wishing ill will on anyone, I did start to laugh a little bit when I read 5 quarts added and I would venture to say a few others did also.

As far as I know the only Jaguar that has a LEVEL indicator is the new 2010 5.0. The lights and pressure indicators relate directly to oil PRESSURE only. I do know that a few of the German cars (Mercedes Benz) that are equipped with level indicators but you can tell by not finding an oil dip stick. I feel comfortable in saying that if you have a dip stick for the oil you best be using it frequently.
