That's OK, I didn't find it insensitive and my reply was meant to be lighthearted but as I typed, the frustration came out.

As I said to JagV8, EPB issues are very common. Usually they 'lock on', but unintentional application at speed is well reported and the subject of a recall on mainly 2003 cars. Dragging EPB issues are another common one. The position of the acuator means it's just waiting to go wrong. Getting it out requires a degree of contortion that I don't possess, so hence my moaning about it. When I got a Jaguar, I just expected it to be built 'better' compared to your average Eurobox.

I'd still say it's the best shape of any car I know and I'd be loath to have to sell it, but my head needs to rule my heart this time.

The reason I said we're not seeing many is that they're nearly all bad batteries rather than any kind of EPB fault. The much fewer EPB ones are not like yours - they're nearly always the module or a problem with the caliper.

I'm sure there will be more as the cars age. There'll be more headlight faults, more SC hose faults, EGR faults, lug nuts breaking and so on.

I wonder if the motor could just be replaced by another but in a different location that's easier access. In the boot (trunk) maybe.

Exactly my thoughts as I was lying on the ground staring at, but not able to manouvere, the actuator the other day!

Should be under the spare wheel, in a recess protected from the elements, with just the cable going through a grommet. Perfect.

OK, it's been in and had a new actuator fitted - £345.
First the indy checked the battery and said it was fine, even at 11.2 v. Then he checked the wires and annouced that "all the earths and lives where there", whatever that means.

After 2 hours and much banging and levering with a 3ft crowbar, it was fixed. I've kept the old one and will take it apart to see if I can see what went wrong.

It was so nice to drive on the way back, the handbrake holds well and is almost silent in operation. Back in for it's MOT on Friday.......

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi manycars,

So great to hear that your EPB is resolved ...
... that you haven't pulled all your hair out,
... that you haven't pushed the car over nearest cliff,
... and that you will disassemble your replaced actuator.

Please post your findings. Pics too?

Cheers.

Very bad way to install the module! The 3' bar can do damage to the rear suspension. Let's hope yours is OK.

Why did he not repair it correctly? Remove 3 bolts drop the rear diff using a floor jack. It's not that hard.

The car passed the MOT today, so all good.

tbird6, it's the acuator not the module, but I did ask if dropping the diff would help as I know it would, but he said he never does it that way. I'll have look when I get a chance, make sure it's all OK underneath.

It was up on a lift, wheels hanging so all they had to do was support the wheels and drop the diff. Experts eh? It all works nicely, so a good result...at a price.
