2 smoke tests were done to make sure there were no vacuum leaks. The first one was inconclusive I guess. The 2nd verified no leaks. The mechanic guessed the maf sensor and I bought one. ($110 guess) No change in the issue. He then stated it was beyond his understanding and told me to take it to the dealer. He is guessing timing chain might have jumped but the dealer said you would notice the rough running condition even if you clear the codes on a startup after the engine was nice and cool. It runs great until it goes into closed loop. I don't think its timing either.
The dealer informed me that putting aftermarket coils and NGK spark plugs isn't advised. He wants to put all new Jaguar coils on and plugs to start with. The Jaguar dealer said there is a communication error from the computer as well. That he said just to start with is $1400 to look at without parts.
I am pulling my hair out. And my wife isn't speaking to me, lol...
The Jaguar dealership called me and really focused me into getting the aftermarket coils off the engine and replacing with genuine Jaguar coils and plugs. I did ask him to check both the ST and LT fuel trims. I also told him to let it sit overnight, then clear the codes and start with a clean set of readings. It runs fine with no codes until it goes into closed loop. That takes about 5-10 minutes. Then it throws the misfire codes all along bank 2 and the one for 1st 1000 revs. Dealer also said the lean code on bank 1 was not showing this past reading.
The dealer will call me tomorrow after redoing the cycle.
He is focused on the coils and the communication errors from the ecm.
After reading through this thread again, you must check the battery and all electrical connections to the coil units and injectors. A battery with 12.2 volts, or less, with the ignition in the off position must be replaced.
As well as the battery, what is the fuel pressure at the Schrader valve? A blocked fuel filter or failing pump can cause low pressure resulting in a lean condition as well.
Jerry called me from White-Allen Jaguar in Dayton. He said he put the new coil packs on and is still getting the misfires on 2 4 & 6. He said he took the ECM off to inspect and found corrosion on some of the pins which would explain some of the communication errors he was getting from the code reader. So I've put Jaguar coils on for no reason and now he's pulling me towards replacing the ECM. Fun, Fun, Fun....
This is a high resolution pic of my ECM. Notice the discoloration of the connections to the board. He is ordering a new ECM. He says its rare that they find one like this. It denotes moisture in the ECM somehow. This has seriously become costly. They did knock off the cost of the parts (coils, plugs, gaskets) which takes off 900 bucks off my total. But still this is now $3300 for the ECM and all the labor and diagnostics that I have to pay.
Well after multiple different attempts at repairs they finally found that the engine was out of timing. They said that the cats became clogged and replaced both cats. After seeing that the new cats did not fix the misfires they replaced the timing chain and now it runs like a top. All fixed but $3750 in repairs.
The only other problem is a leaking AC line which I need to identify the part number for and order a replacement for as it will not hold refrigerant. Any ideas how to identify the part numbers for ordering?
Find a trustworthy indie shop and stay away from that Jaguar dealership in the future. Their wild goose chase wound up soaking you for some serious money.....
The folks at SNG Barratt Group can help you identify the part number for your leaking A/C line. Call them at (800) 452-4787. Be sure to have them mail you their S-Type parts catalog. It's a very valuable resource and it's free....
After your adventure with this agency, perhaps a ring to the Dealer Principal or General Manager is in order. It would not be unreasonable for you to ask for a refund for some of the work performed since it appears you were providing a training opportunity for the Technician(s).
