That one is only about 45 minutes from my house if you want me to check it out.

Let me know.

A quick search on www.autotrader.ca showed 115 S-types for sale in Canada right now. Who needs eBay and US cars?

The original quote is someone blow off steam. It is clearly full of exaggerations about costs. If it is indded true, I feel sorry for the person. But you take a risk with every car you buy. We call them 'Friday cars' or lemons, cars where for no reason they end up being more unreliable than other apparently identical ones. My most reliable car was a Fiat (not known for their reliabilty) and my least reliable car was the other Fiat that I owned! The only car that I have owned by never once needed a rescue service for a breakdown was my Volvo. The most expensive repairs I have faced was with the same car.

With my Jag I have my fingers crossed, intend to maintain it well and put Ł100 away every month to pay for repairs and servicing. If it turns out to be a 'Friday car' I will sell it and get another one and cross my fingers again.

If you know so much, stop asking. I'll say it again. Price is determined by market, plain and simple. As far as auctions go, there are two types, Dealer only and Public. My experience with public auctions are simply this, there is a reason the cars are there. They are usually crap that people or dealers couldn't sell. Now, if you have access to a dealer auction, stop wasting our time and simply state that you have access to buy at a dealer auction and do it. If not, face the facts, if you want a good car your gonna have to pay what the market demands. Here is an example of market. I bought my 04 Accord Coupe in 06 with 19k miles for 15,500. That was a good price for a used car still in warranty. In 08 I traded it for the S Type and got 15,000 from the dealer (after negotiating the price for the S, BTW) even with it being out of warranty with 55k miles. Why only a 500 drop? Simple, gas prices created a demand for high mpg cars. Current economic conditions are still driving up the retail price of used cars, any used cars. So, to put it simply, if you really want help, start treating people here with respect. There is a ton of veteran car experience contained in the users on this site. Your consistent negative comments toward advice that you don't want to hear is just going to turn other members off and pretty soon you won't be getting any help at all. Think about it.

Being from Toronto myself and moving to Dallas a few years ago I can say that Buffalo is the closest city about 2 hours away. Detroit is 3-4 hours away. Rochester 3-4. Any of the northern states are within driving distance. Cleveland,Columbus,Pittsburg,Philly, New York are all possible and very doable over a weekend.

We imported cars into Canada when I lived there and my brother still does today..

I eventually insisted on Southern cars from Texas or Arizona to avoid salt or salt air contamination.

Yes ebay is ok and most will ship to Canada or the nearest US city of your choice. Once the paper work is complete there is no problem buying the car.I look for cars on the web and generally make a deal of or around the auction this is fine once you put a down payment on the car and get an agreement for full refund if the car is not what you expected.
This will require you to fly into the city of purchase and they will pick you up at the airport.
If the car doesn't meet your expectations you fly home with a refund and a chance to say you visited a city that you might not of visited before.Any good dealer will let you take the car for an independant health check at any local repair facility.

Most late model US cars are much cheaper than the same car in Canada and southern cars seem to be cheaper again (I don't know why)

This is time consuming and costly, but you get piece of mind and avoid shipping charges if you drive it back. Still cheaper than buying at home.

As for the safety and emmision check you will have to do that once you get back to TO. Should be no problem with a late model low mileage good condition car. Safety and echeck are low cost and even buying a car at home doesn't mean it has been done either.

Sorry for the long post. I also have mentioned some of this on an earlier post and I suspect Cars smart not is not listening or is ignoring our advice to him.

Most of us have been around the block and our advice is sound and could help him find a good car and save money.

ive been working around cars my whole life, and i have a pretty good idea of what to look for when reasearching vehicles. So when you have a screen name of carsmartnot, and you ask if people think your retarded, i tend to wonder..............i mean if you sit there and say you arent smart, dont you think that people will treat you accordingly???

just a thought i had...........

i was sincerely trying to look around and see what i could find for you, but ill stop. i have many better things to do then search the internet for a decent deal for someone else (even though i cant help seeing what STR's are out there at the same time)

Well, I never thought of you that way- before your post above. Excuse me for trying to help. If you've got all the answers, why keep asking?

I found my car locally via autotrader. Buying the same one in the US and importing it would not have been cheaper in the long run- in my case. Good luck.

Hey, but what is the US version of 'certify and e-test'.. like what do they call it? is it just 'inspection'

Here in Texas once your car is 2-3 years old you must have a yearly safety and e-test done. Once it is done and you sell the car within that year it does not need to be redone unlike Ontario that requires it everytime the car is sold.(Government tax grab)
I am not sure about the laws in other States or Provinces.

Importing to Canada seems daunting but once you do it you will see that it is no big deal.

Bought my 2000 S-type 3.0 a year ago with 39k on it for $10,000. I've put tires on it $570, and changed a window regulator for $79 (Thanks to this forum.) It's not perfect but my wife drives it everyday and we've taken it on trips with the entire family and no problems.
I've owned over 18 different cars in only 22 years of driving. The worst is a tie between a brand new Passat GLX V6 and a used Porsche 924S. The VW would have cost more if it wasn't under warranty. I see a German trend there, anyone else? (Did I just say that?) The most reliable?? VW Fox...it was a small tank. Just keep an open mind. If you save a few thousand on a purchase, remember that when you go for repairs. Or spend the extra to get a newer car and not have to worry about it.
