Default Exhaust cut-outs?

Last weekend I organized a little get together and cruise with some fellow Central Florida forum members. We had a really nice time exchanging stories and checking out each other's cars.
One member, Vector, had a nice older X-Type R with eletric exhaust cut outs. Man! That sounded so nice. Benefit is it stays limo quiet until he decides. I imagine it costs about half of what a nice system would.
Any opinions?

Cat man knows it's an XJR.

The cut outs were about $400 + 4 hours labor to install. Stainless welding too.

I am very pleased with the cut outs. You can have luxury car quiet, a little burble or full out race car sound and everything in between.

Here is my thread on the install with pics:

sounds like a cool meet went down, as for the cut outs,
meh, way too much noise, its basically open header at full open, that sort of blaring unpleasantness gets old real fast and doesnt make the car all that enjoyable to drive imo,

a properly set up full length exhaust gives up no power and all in all, can be made to sound good 'all' the time; an open cut out is frankly 'look-at-me' obnoxious, with no 'tuned' quality to its note,

not to put down buddy's mod, or to discourage you from going that route, but i personally wouldnt bother, ive also heard anecdotal evidence that the heat from the exhaust eventually kills the electronic motor that drives the flap...

As I said in my post, the cut outs can be tuned and played like a musical instrument: open them a little and you get the sound of a cat back exhaust, open more and it gets louder and, yes, more obnoxious, but I don't run them that way unless I am trying to have some fun.

The problem with dedicated full length exhaust is that you get what you get, with droning at highway speeds sometimes a problem. I like the quiet when mine are closed and the infinite choices available as they open.

Not to put down your "anecdotal evidence," but I did extensive research before choosing a vendor for the cut outs. Newer and better designs do not have the problems with the motors that the older designs exhibited, they perform very well for a long time.

As far as being enjoyable to drive, my Wife says she has never seen me smile so much as when I'm driving the jag and playing with the cut outs. YMMV.

Ya those are the way to go to have a dual purpose setup. That way you don't have to sacrifice sound or performance.

Cool, glad you're liking it, thanks for the feedback!

You can certainly tune a full exhaust to cut down on drone and get you a pleasant exhaust note too though, but to each his own.

Just like any mod, it's a "to each, his own" situation. I can remember way back in the day these things were operated by cable. Like that lasted very long in Wisconsin. LOL
There are no headers for our cars as of now so any help on the exhaust flow will help for performance. I don't plan on starting a drag race career either, but loved the sound of that V8 at our gathering last weekend!

Many good perspectives here. I would argue that a simple magnaflow 18 inch dual in dual out muffler with the Tru x pipe is the way to go. $60 purchased, $50 installed, great low end burble, with a V8 M3 sound towards redline.
