Default Expansion Tank Removal

Hi guys I am new to this forum and a newbie Jag owner, but have been recommended to try here for help with my 2003 S-type 3.0L automatic.

I'm about to attempt to change the expansion tank. I've sourced a replacement via eBay, however, I'm unsure about the clip that holds the hose at the bottom of the tank... i.e. slide the silver clip off and then what...?? Also, how do you stop all the coolant from coming out of the tank??

Stupid questions may be, but any pointers would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Steve

Hello Steve,

I used a small hose through the fill cap and syphoned out as much coolant as possible.

Heres a link to the removal, be sure to read post # 8: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...lacment-52090/

Just use disilled water to fill up the system that had been drained out. Don't forget to bleed the system when finished!

Thanks for the info. Here goes tomorrow if its not raining in sunny Bucks. I have the usual leak I guess around the small pipe at the top. previous owner has epoxy resined it but its has started to give.My confidence in self mechanics is at a all time low after spending 7.5 hours replacing 1 set brake shoes on another car (Rover 416) -everything just seemed to go wrong.!
Not even thought about bleeding!
Thanks again.
Steve

After a Rover 416 the Jag tank will be a treat.

Thumbs up

WOW did it !. Followed the advice given on the forum to the letter and took me about 30 mins or so. Spent most of the time trying to fathom out the 'clip'- why would you have a quick release on the expansion tank-you are hardly going to wip it out and take it shopping with you!!
It also does not seem that robust to withstand all the water pressure??
Pictures were great too !.
Thanks

Steve

hi i am new to this and am just going to attempt to replace the tank on my s type 2.5 v6 '04 plate as it is leaking at top nipple, my question is does a total change of coolant need to be carried out afterwards?

No. You will likely need to top up - just be certain not to use an incompatible coolant since it may block the system causing horrific damage. (I find the dealer price OK over here, especially if you plan on changing it at some point and buy their larger size.)

As you are new(ish) you may not be able to see pics & PDFs yet....

If you syphon out the coolant in the expansion tank into a clean container you can reuse it then top off with distilled water.

When I replaced my expansion tank this way, I had only lost about a cup (give or take) of coolant. When I topped off with the distilled water, my coolant fell between the specs.

Be VERY careful about that wire clip. It can appear to be properly seated when it's not. We have had at least one member destroy his engine after the connection was taken apart. The engine got hot and the expansion blew the connection apart. It is a large hose and he lost so much water so fast he did not know what happened until it was all over!!

It's pretty tight where the hose is so it will stay in place even if the clip is not installed correctly. Be sure and try to pull it apart while you are in there.

Just a heads up so you know to check it a few times until the car has run thru a few heat and cool cycles.

hi all,
Got the tank from Jag dealer(£77) today however i cant fathom how to get the electrical clip that goes to the level sensor off without fully taking the sensor out of the tank which i could do and put in the new tank but since there is a new sensor with it i figure i may as well use, any ideas?

On the electrical connection, on the bottom side of the connector towards where the wires go into the connector there is a tab, push up with your thumb and slide the connector off the level sensor.

Hi again,
Managed to replace tank this morning, took about 25 mins and was reasonably straightforward even for me so most people could do this themselves :-)

Default Reduce Fluid Loss During Expansion Tank Replacement

I just replaced the Expansion Tank due to a cracked overflow nipple, but wanted to keep the garage floor clean . . . sans mess.

Using a length of 1/4" OD Drip Irrigation Tubing (flexible), I inserted it into tank through the filler and siphoned out about 25% of the fluid. Due to the internally moulded 'dams' in the tank, the tubing would not go to the bottom.

Since the nipple was cracked, and the tank no longer of value, I drilled a hole through the back side of the tank (passenger side) above the fluid level.

I then inserted the tube through the hole I drilled, all the way to the bottom of the tank, which allowed siphoning of all the fluid.

I slide the 'C-Clip' to the release position and removed the lower hose, and then removed the tank.

Installed the new tank, and the whole process took about 30 minutes. The tank cost $102 online, and since the Dealership was going to charge $350 for the job, I'm a happy camper :-)
