So we have some progress today

I was given approx 10 litres of standard ATF by a big maintenance company where I work and set to work when I got home filling up the gearbox. It finally started to dribble out after about 7 litres!

I took the car off the axle stands and took it gingerly for a little drive. I was very pleased that it pulled away smoothly and got into second gear without any issues I wasn't able to test it fully as there wasn't much time (and the brakes need attention) but from what I could determine it seems to have survived its low fluid ordeal. Seems these ZF boxes are pretty bullet proof?

Next stage will be to give it a proper test, then replace the filter and flush the fluids with some proper spec ATF as I'm sure that running this fluid will cause problems in the long run.

What ATF were you given? It may indeed meet the recommended Shell specs....

Hey maybe you got lucky??

If it is driving good I would drop the pan and at least check it. If it were me I would change the filter just because I now know it's been run low.

The ZF is pretty good but several have been done in by running them low on fluid so they are not any different than any other transmission. If you abuse it something is gonna fail.

Update... The fluid was only dextron III so I flushed it out with millers Millermatic DM.
After the initial test drive I have driven it slightly further and it seems ok, even under full power (but only to the end of the road and back).

So I replaced the sump (which was cracked) with the intergral filter and 'fixed' the leaking cooler line (weeping slightly more then leaking). The filter wasn't too dirty and there wasn't much fur on the magnets or chips in the filter. It all seemed quite normal for 73K miles TBH.

Next week is the MOT test and then it will be on the road. I'm hoping that there are no slip issues during gearchanges. I guess I'll find out on the way to the MOT test!?

P0730
P0731
P0735
P0782
P0784
P0788
P0829

It drives, sort of. Putting it into drive results in no movement, and revving the engine to about 3000 rpm makes the car start to creep forward. Same with reverse.

The PO said they had it up to 70 mph but acceleration was virtually impossible from stationary/ low speed. He seemed to think it was stuck in one gear as it didn't change gear at all and was at something like 3500 rpm at 70 mph.

So, what could I be looking at?

I'm going to check the trans fluid level first, as this is always a good place to start.
If the level is ok I'll drop the trans pan and inspect the filter and oil for debris and probably have the fluid analysed.
Next is to take the valve body off and check the solenoids P0788 indicates that the shift solenoid (MV1?) is showing a high reading (Stuck??)

Any other ideas guys and gals?

Cheers
Steve
Hi Steve, it sounds like your transmission is stuck in third gear, which would be "limp-home" mode.

Before you do anything in the way of spending money, take the battery off and charge it overnight, then put it back on and see where your are then.

Good luck

Dave

So the good news is she passed the MOT second time, a lower rear shock absorber bush needed replacing.

And even better news is that the gearbox is perfect! So silky smooth you'd think it was a brand new car

Now all I need to do is replace the worn front shock absorbers and it will be a new car (partially) lol

It's amazing how well things work when they are filled to the correct level!!

I think you got lucky and did not damage things when the fluid was low. 7 quarts is a HUGE amount to be low!!
