Mine first 2003 STR had about 100k when I sold it, my only issue I had before I sold it was it need a new AC compressor. Read the board comments, there are things to look for. I'd make sure it was taken care of and serviced correctly.

Injekter,

I kinda have heard of a possible 2004 silver STR that may just be making its way towards the for sale section here from a very well respected fellow member androulakis (George) at a great price.

I know if I were in the market for an STR I would contact him immediately!

Thanks Rick!

My car is an 03 though.

Silver (MDZ) with warm charcoal (LEG) interior.

116k

In the last 6 months that I've had it.

New o2 sensors ($175)
New thermostat ($71)
New Bosch water pump - preventative maintenance ($140)
New coolant recovery tank ($105)
New coolant matrix hose under the recovery tank ($122)
New dccv ($90)
New used climate control panel ($125)

In the last 400 miles

New brakes front and rear

New brembo rotors ($865)
New akebono ceramic pads ($274)
Trans serviced with the ctsc kit. ($260)
New hid headlight bulbs ($131)

Mind you this is my wholesale parts pricing and does not include the cost of labor - me and my brother own a shop.

Car has a $2k stereo in it. Kenwood flip out deck DVD and the garmin nav add on (integrated into the touchscreen) iPod etc. Sirrius tuner as well, but it's not activated.

Elemental designs nine.2 amp pushing the front alpine speakers. I have an infinity 6802 cs component set for the front but I never installed it. It sounds decent enough as is.

Car has almost new pilot sports in the rear. 65% Bridgestone potenzas in the front.

Now it's a used car and they all have their flaws so here goes. And mind you I am my own harshest critic when it comes to cars. Every car I have sold has exceeded the buyers expectation based on my description.

Car has a clean carfax / auto check etc. But it's had a bit of a front end mishap. Probably something getting run over in the road. Front bumper has been repainted. It's an okay, but not stellar job. If you know how to pick out paintwork you can tell. Car is also missing the front part of the inner fender liner on the passenger side. I tried to get one from a forum member but he flaked on me. About $150 new.

The trim around the windshield on the driver side, some small sections of the vinyl coating they used has peeled off.

The very front plastic piece of the dash (that had the alarm led) has a crack in it.

There is very slight wear on the drivers seat bolster closest to the door. Inevitable from getting in / out in a car with black leather...

The wheels have been refinished at some point prior to me owning it and some of the new paint has chipped in a few small spots revealing the old paint underneath.

Mechanically the car is 110% no check engine lights no drama, heat and a/c are perfect, shifts right and is fast as heck.

PM me for pics. You'll be surpised. For an 11 year old car, it's an 8.5 /10.

Take care,

George

George.

Nice to see you posting in the S-type forum now and again.

Regarding STRs, I've had my 04 STR for over a year now and overall it has been a joy to own. Last thing on my mind to sell it!

I've been keeping track of STRs that show up on E-bay and other "for sale" postings, and it appears that numerous STRs are showing up for sale with 100+K miles. Some are in great shape and others are pretty tired looking.

If there were really less than 2000 STRs built for all model years, I believe that we are seeing a very quick attrition rate of STRs being parted out or scrapped. Seems like most "driven" STRs have 100K or more miles on them. (With normal maintenance, how many miles can one last before it dies???)

I've been looking into the cost of gathering the parts to rebuilt the STR's AJ34S engine, and it appears that there is a big shortage of new parts for rebuilds. I figure $4K minimum in parts for a long block rebuilt. To put a STR with a tired drivetrain back into "reliable" running condition will easily cost $12K to $15K. This is equal to what the value is for 2003 to 2005 STRs.

Based on the cost to refurbish the cars and keep them going, I'de wager that within another 5 years, STRs will become collector cars, and there wont be many around.

If you want a piece of Jaguar history, purchasing and driving an STR is well worth the time and money before they become a rare commodity.

Hey Joe,

Good to hear from you as well... My car is a clean driver. I drive it daily on my 80 mile commute. But all of u guys know me by now. This is what I do get something new every 6 months. The benefits of having a dealer license I suppose.

Str's and all "r" Jags are and always were a rare breed. I've seen a couple go to 150-200k. I have only come across a couple being parted. Usually because they are wrecked. I've seen a couple with hurt motors as well, but I can bet you they were beaten on if not flat out abused. And poorly maintained. Oil is like blood. Dirty oil is like cholesterol. Kills motors. The two that I have seen with hurt motors both shot a rod through the block. I can almost bet there is more to those stories.

The thing is I'm not necessary in agreement regarding future collectibility. Granted I once owned an e30 m3 which I traded on an e36 m3 bc the s14 never did want to run quite right without some sort of black magic. That e30 m3 is worth 5x what the e36 is worth, although clean e36's have reversed course and started to climb in value quickly. You know what else had started to climb? X350 xjr's...

There are about 8k str's over the course of a 5 year production run that made their way to the states. Honestly your valuations are way off. Id be willing to let mine go for half of your proposed range. Granted I have the benefit of buying wholesale at the auctions etc.. It's not a car for the faint of heart but if you can turn your own wrenches it's no more expensive to repair and maintain then a Chevy or Nissan.

I have my collector cars, my 96 impala ss, my 92 z28 convertible, my Arden xk8. This was just a driver for me....

Besides when one blows up, we just throw an ls2 in it... Lol how's that going btw???

Take care,

George

8000 STRs? That is a lot more than I thought. Makes the STRs downright common! Where did you get your numbers? I would tend to agree more with your number based on how many STRs I see for sale.

Joe,

Your figures are for cars that stayed in the UK.
See below:

http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/f27/jag...res-48357.html

With their high road taxes, and $10 a gallon "petrol" not many s/c 4.2 liter cats prowled the roads....

More on US import figures coming...

Take care,

George

Here is the total STR production...

I knew 8k rang a bell. I venture that 75 percent if not more of those cars ventured to our shores... Just look at how rare these cars are in Canada.

Take care,

George

It all depends on how the car was taken care of. I can see str's going 150k+ without any catastrophic problems. There well built cars. I just hit 100k without any issues except a busted coolant hose and vac line. Nobody would ever think my car was almost 10 years old and has 100k miles on it. Especially once there in it. Before I bought my str I test drove an 03 with 125k and It was the biggest pos, had misfires trans shifted crazy, obviously the car wasn't taken care of. Find one in good condition and you should be fine for a long time.

Don't forget, if STRs are tough to find, there is always an XFR.
