Default Fixing Transmission "Chirp" Solved Harsh Downshifts

So, when I first got my STR it had a nasty tendency to pop an inappropriate harsh shift, particularly when exiting rolling or brief stops. Real neckbreaker at times and totally jarring after the otherwise smoothly powerful ride.

Got the system flashed twice under warranty and retrained the TCM, but the symptoms always came back.

A few months later (after my factory warranty was over, of course) I started hearing the "chirp" following hard acceleration. After looking into it and seeing the tech info on this forum I headed to the dealer to have the transmission drained and refilled with new fluid plus friction modifier.

After the trans service (which included another re-flash) I kept it in standard mode for 250 miles, driving normally (including some pretty fast highway runs).

Over 5k miles since that service and I no longer have either the chirp or the shift issue. Seems like pretty good result for a 1 hour service, some expensive trans fluid, and a couple hundred miles of non-sport mode driving.

Could be a coincidence of course, but for anyone who's having either problem it might be worth a look.

Can I ask what the dealer charged for the Trans service?

I get the "rolling stop" lurch as well and no reflash has solved it... I actually have both but really am not all that bothered by the harsh downshift....The rolling stop issue drives me nuts...

I have essentially mastered how to break and gas now to minimize almost all lurch issues. But it would be nice to get the issue resolved once and for all. From my research though this is virtually NO known permanent cure to the infamous lurch.

How much do they charge for a reflash?

I got the first two reflashes done under warranty, so no idea of the cost. The chirp fix cost $186.61 total including labor and materials. Because I had complained about shift issues while I was still under warranty they threw the TCM reprogram in for free, so I still don't know what that costs by itself.

Quod erat desperandum. Amazing what fresh atf fluid plus a good additive will achieve. I noticed more than one contributor said it cured the dreaded lurch.

Am I reading your two posts correct? In the first one you said the dealer did a drain and fill and added a friction additive...That drain and fill service only cost you $186.61?? If that is correct, please tell us what dealer you used. That is Way lower than any other trans service quote I've seen..I'm not being sarcastic here...It may actually be worth it to look them up. My sister lives outside of Boston in Mass... I could road trip to see her and the family and squeeze in a service....

The receipt showed a charge for 1 hour labor plus sixty-something dollars for the fluid.

I went to Jake Kaplan of Norwood for the service. They've been generally good to deal with in my experience so far (no more expensive than you'd expect a luxury car dealer to be). That said, any dealer that charges a similar labor rate should come in about where Kaplan's did. Of course if you are also charged for a reflash, test drive, etc. then I'm sure it gets more expensive while the clock ticks.

I question whether your transmission fluid was actually changed. Sounds more to me as if the dealership just pumped in the additive to mix with your existing fluid....

Thats what the service calls for doesnt it ? Last I checked all it required was a little fluid be removed, and replaced with "xxxx" which someone stated was zf+ fluid.

Entirely possible. Since I only see one charge for fluid it is probably just the friction modifier.

blackstr - Any chance you could post the part # for the additive please?

The additive I used for this job was "Forte" (accent on the 'e') cost £14. It certainly had an effect. I don't know if this is available in US, but I'd imagine it is. The parent co. is in South Africa. It comes in what looks like a toothpaste tube.

No scanner, so I'll type in the lines from my receipt:

Code:
ATA ADD TRANSMISSION ADDITIVE
             771 CPJ 125.00
      1 C2C37157 OIL-TRANSMISSION 61.64
That's all the detail I have.
