Front Brake Pads Change....

Mike,
Excellent point. I replaced the lousy factory capped lug nuts in January 2010. The solid Mitsubishi lug nuts I chose have been fantastic. No corrosion whatsoever. This is indeed Job One for any new forum member that is not yet aware of just how worthless the factory lug nuts are....

While replacement might be nice, I prefer to keep the
originals given that they have the exact shank dimensions
to match the wheels.
I've seen close matches, but never exact.

Also on the UK forum.
I watched in horror as an experienced mechanic damaged one of mine, by being careless - even though I'd warned him and even shown him a previously-damaged (not by me) one. Obviously I will never go back to him.
When I can, such as a puncture, I take a wheel off before going to have a repair/replacement. But for multiple tyres I can't do that and that's when it occurred.
Over the years I've taken my wheels off dozens of times without grief, but I'm careful.

To each his own....
I've had too many lousy capped lug nuts on too many different vehicles to risk keeping them in place. They are a disaster waiting to happen, especially if some careless kid at the tire shop goes after them with an impact wrench even after being told not to (I always specify "hand tools only" before I hand over my keys). By far the safest strategy is to replace them with a decent set of solid lug nuts as soon as you acquire the vehicle. So for at least 20 years that's exactly what I've done. No more lug nut issues for me since, and that's my goal....
