Fuel Data Computer Error
This has been showing up intermittently for the past few days. Now it's on permanently so there's no fuel level indication on the gauge. Grrr. No codes registered, no CEL. Tried disconnecting the battery for a hard reset, no joy.
I know the battery has been thought to be the number 1 cause, is there other confirmed possibilities?
I'm sure Rick's missus hasn't been anywhere near here so that's out.

MIL is about PCM and mainly emissions. You're seeing a different subsystem (mainly ICM). You'd need a jag-type tool to diagnose it but could try ETM to see if it works and if so what it shows for the fuel sender(s).
But it's probably the battery. ETM shows its voltage, too, but not sure how accurately.

As they say in Newfoundland- 'well oil beef hooked!'
I tried charging the battery- no difference.
Disconnected the battery, cleaned the terminals, cleaned the earth points- no difference.
I tried splicing in a known good spare battery- no difference
The plan was to head up to the car parts store tomorrow to spring for a new battery.
Thought I'd take a page from Rick's book and tried filling the fuel tank. With a rated capacity of 69.5L, I managed to put in 68.8L. Whaaaaaa? Could have sworn I had almost a half tank.............
Got in, turned the key- all back to normal.
Mark this one solved please.
Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions.

I wonder what happens if the float in the tank sticks- is the fuel data computer smart enough to see the discrepancy between level and calculated consumption and throws an error signal?

In thinking back and as said above, I remember the fuel gauge reading around half a tank just before the error appeared where the gauge reading went to zero. The small amount of driving I did between the fault appearing and the fill up of 68 L does not explain consumption of half a tank's worth.
For the fuel data computer to function, it needs to know rate of fuel flow, distance travelled and tank level. Tank level is required to calculate distance remaining to empty but not instant or average consumption.
If fuel flow and distance inputs are within norms but the tank level does not indicate a decrease (due to a stuck float) then the distance remaining to empty calculation would increase in value to an impossible number.
Perhaps at that point, the error message is generated and the gauge function inhibited.
Maybe Rick or others that have seen this error could chime in. One day every thing is fine, the next an error is displayed followed by an unexpectedly empty tank?

Several years ago when I had the S-Type, I experienced something similar. The gas gauge was going from 3/4 to 3/8, back and forth, but very slowly. I wasn't driving it much at that time so I didn't catch on right away. One time when it was at 3/8, I went to a gas station and filled it up only to put 4-5 gallons in it. The "remaining distance" on the computer also showed the various mileages which differed from each gas level as shown on the gauge. OK, something wrong...
Called the dealer and made an appointment to fix it. It was the sending unit for the jet pump that was malfunctioning. They replaced that and the jet pump and all was well. Car was under warrantee at the time, otherwise $899-900 to fix it.
Don't know if this is the same as what you're going thru, but sounds similar.

Thanks for the info. My car's behaviour is just getting stranger and stranger and may end up doing the same thing as yours.
As noted above, the error and non-registering gauge seemed to have been cured by simply filling the tank. I've now put about about 250 Km on the car but the gauge still indicates full or almost full (?).
The average consumption and instant consumption seem to be indicating properly as does the trip meter, but the distance remaining to empty is indicating unrealistic numbers.
The fuel gauge will waiver slightly off the full position for 10-15 minutes, but then return to full and sit there for another 10-15 minutes.
How strange.

I was curious if you ever resolved your fuel gauge issue? If so, what was the cause and cure?
Thanks,
Steve

I quit the dealer in 2006 so I only have the JEPC from what ever is available online.
I still have buddies at the dealer Parts Dept but if you call a Jaguar dealer with an OLD part number, they will see the SUPERSEDED number and advise that the OLD number is NLA.
Ask for the NEW number.
