Default "Fuel Pump System Failure"

Hello,

Does anyone know what the "Fuel Pump System Failure" message means exactly (i.e., what really triggers it)?

I've seen this message twice now in the past 2 months. Each time the car has just been started after sitting overnight... the car starts right up and runs fine, the only thing noticeable is that the fuel tank gauge is not working (needle sitting far below empty) and the distance to empty stats are inoperable. After a couple minutes of driving, the message goes out and the fuel gauge and stats come back to life.

Any ideas?

The only work ever done in that area is that I had the fuel tank replaced at 40k miles under the recall. The car now has 93k on it.

Thanks for any help,

Bob

Bob the only thing that I can say is I have gotten into Joyces with no and I mean -zero- gas in the tank and the DIC stated fuel pump system failure. I dropped a few gallons in and ran it to the refill station.

Haven't had problems......Oh boy...

Rick,

I finally managed to convince Jan not to run the gas tanks in either of her vehicles (the S-Type and the Lexus SUV) down below an eighth of a tank. I would prefer her filling up at a quarter tank remaining, but an eighth of a tank is better than showing up with the empty tank light illuminated as she often used to do. I told her that if she continued to do that in either vehicle, she was certain to burn her fuel pumps up and leave herself stranded on the side of the highway at the mercy of any serial killer who happened to be passing by with his machete in his trunk. That little scenario actually worked - it's been at least six months since she's showed up with the empty tank light illuminated in either vehicle....

You may want to take the same approach with Joyce....

Thanks Rick. When it happened yesterday, the tank was indeed just above empty (dist. to empty was 38 mi once the stats started working again)... so there might just be a correlation there. Still wondering though what the fault(s) is/are that the message is supposed to indicate. Couldn't find anything in the JTIS...

You're more than a bit hopeful if you expect everything to be in JTIS, especially as it was frozen before your car was built

Ha, well I really wasn't expecting much from JTIS, but I figured I better check it before querying the forum... I didn't want to get the "You need to get the JTIS... best $4 you can spend" replies that seem fairly common... just like the "check the archives" replies (which of course I did).

So... does anyone have an answer on this? Thanks,

You could refer to the more up to date info on jag's TOPIX. Quite cheap and has more than JTIS, though I reckon JTIS is better value.

Or you might read JTIS about how the system works or the previous threads here, and thus find how it works. The message seems self-explanatory.

You might hope it's not terminal and resolve not to run the fuel low.

Plenty of choices I don't see what more of an answer you could reasonably expect.

Bob, did the message disappear after filling her up?

In Joyces cases yes.

Shut vehicle off, pump fuel, start vehicle, no message!

Indeed it did. No clue as to why though.

Maybe this was Jaguars way of drawing attention to the fact that the driver operated manual fuel pumping system had failed to operate!

Happy New Year!
