Exclamation Fuel Tank Flange Seal

This is rediculous! The fuel tank flange cracked on my S Type 05 V8. The dealer said they had replaced 5 flanges on S types this year alone. To make matters worse, Jaguar has these flanges on back order! They had to cannabalize another car on the lot and give me the used part off of that car, so no warranty, but at least I can drive my car.

Odd it's (supposedly) so common as it doesn't appear here often (or at all?). Or on any of the other active S-Type sites. "The dealer said" - doesn't work for me, unless I know the dealer is one of the (few) knowledgeable ones.

What's the part #? (I've no idea what part you mean LOL)

The part is 4CSJ10 or possibly XR850737 Ring-Retaining but that may be the pin that holds the flange on. In the description of repairs on the invoice they call it a flange clamping ring. Hope that helps.....
I do know they had to take the fuel tank out to replace this ring. They gave me the old part and it indeed was cracked. The computer detected gas fumes which caused the check engine light to go on.

HIJaged:
Can you please post the part number when you get the new one??

As jagV8 said it is not a common problem. Be aware that the only recall for the 2005 S Type was a gas tank issue so if your car was repaired in the past it might have had the seal damaged at that time.

Sounds like item 4 (or 5 or 6) here. Never heard of them being replaced as stated. I don't see why the tank needs removing - access is under the back seat. I'm puzzled by "The computer detected gas fumes which caused the check engine light to go on." as it doesn't have a fume detector. Still, it can detect a leak (of air, causing vacuum loss) into the tank so they probably mean that. You'd think they'd just say so, though, rather than what looks like some bogus statement.

It is part #4 on the passenger side! Great picture, thanks for the response. Yes, they said they had to remove the tank to replace it. $325.00 labor. The part was free (used).

My bad, I paraphrased their words when I should have just typed out the technical jargon; Retrieved codes P0442 and P0456. Performed smoke test to locate evapp leak. found leak coming form the passenger side fuel tank flange. Found the flange clamping ring cracked. Replaced the flange ring, cleared all codes.
So I guess the computer detected an evaporator leak????

You can get good details from the codes PDF in the FAQs

I wonder if the part was overtightened if the TSB mentioned was done. People overtighten far more often than they undertighten it seems.

The 2005 S Type was very good and this is the only mandatory recall I have ever heard of. From the description it sounds like it DOES NOT apply to the STR. As the STR has two fuel pumps and no transfer pump.

Our car's factory fuel tank was replaced under the R176 recall back in 2007 when the original owner complained of a fuel smell in the cabin and a small fuel leak on the ground when filling the tank at a gas station. This action must have fixed the issue - I purchased the car in December 2008 and have never had a fuel tank problem, just the well-known fuel door lock assembly issue. Our car is on its third fix for that problem. Perhaps the third time is the charm, but as long as the hatch pins are made of plastic, I believe this issue can always return. I now keep that pin lubed with white lithium grease, and that seems to help....

This shows the STR is potentially affected by Recall R176.
http://www.epa.gov/oms/cert/recall/420b08012.pdf

You can read it via google's Quick View if you search on some such as
+2005 +jaguar +recall +tank +"s-type" +r176 filetype : pdf

(remove the spaces round the colon, but this site turned it into an emoticon without them)

Were you smelling fuel when this happened or just got the Check Engine light?

(in case I didnt do the image right you can see it here Jaguar XR850737 Genuine Vapor Valve Retainer Ring | eBay)

Here is the part everyone is talking about part # xr850737 Vapor Retainer ring. The other two parts are a gasket and a worm drive clamp.

I had this same issue on my 05 Jag when I bought it last year. I contacted my jaguar dealer and they stated the recall was done on the vehichle back in 2008 and nothing was replaced saying everyting was in spec. I bought the jag for a great price knowing it had some issues. This being one. I think What happened was the previous owner had some work done and the mechanic overtightened them causing them to bust. I had a temporary (some what) fix inplace for a year now but want to get rid of the annoying CEL. I just bougth the parts off ebay for $105 a piece.

The question I have now is when I get these new ones in. What is the torque spec for the worm drive clamp that goes around it? At $105 a piece I do not want to break them from overtightening them. If anyone knows the torque spec or where i can find that would be awesome. I already downloaded the manual but did not see any spec in there.

Thanks in advance.

i now have an extremely similar issue... my 2001 s type is throwing the evap code that leads to the fuel cap... replaced the cap and the code returned had a leak down test conducted and the mechanic claims that my tank has a small evap hole in the tank which i find hard to believe being a plastic tank... in which case is it east to access the tank under the rear seat? he wants 1500 for tank replacement and i dont have that kind of dough right now not to mention i feel like its very possible its just a seal and even if it is a small hoe in the tank jb weld would probably be more than enough to solve the problem... i just bought my jag in june for 2000 puts brakes all around did a tune up and replaced the valve cover gasket... the car has 86000 miles on it and is really wel kept and i would hate to hear that it has such a huge issue s im not sure id be eager to drop the tank and what not... any diagrams and/or advice would be really really appreciated guys!!

Leak down? Odd. (For me that's something else entirely.)

Smoke test should show the actual leak - think about why...
