Ok, I am now ready to recommend that everyone who owns a 05 S Type to drive it off a bridge and say good riddence! Why would gas tank seals fail on a car that is 6 years old? I have had a Nissan Sentra since 1988 that never had a gas tank problem, to this day you can still hear the vacuum "swish" when you open the gas cap. Jaguar Honolulu told me that this is the 8th S Type that has been brought in with this problem. To me this is a valid safty issue and should be recalled! I am going to fight Jaguar on this one because I am not paying $4,000.00 and wait 3 weeks for a tank to be delivered to Hawaii. This is it for me after this fiasco its bye bye jaguar! Anyone else have this problem? I need more ammunition in my letter to Jaguar North America....

 

Did Jaguar show you the leaking gas tank seals? These dudes may be conning you bro. I've never heard of such a thing with these cars. Let's take another look....

 

If it's genuinely known about it'll be a recall. Never heard of it and don't recall such a recall but they're all online so just take a look.

Try the forum Search and you'll find a lack of others. Which is more than odd for something so allegedly common.

I'd be tempted to put in a formal complaint or two if broad hints don't work, most likely I'd contact Jaguar Corporate to let them know they have a rogue franchise. I suppose the car's just nicely out of warranty.

I don't see why you'd need the whole tank or why it would be $4K. You can buy a whole car for about that.

 

Back a few months ago when I had Joyces Jag aligned at Scott Jaguar. They told me there is a recall and had something to do with the gas tank. I just can't remember what. We still haven't gotten it in yet.

Oh and they offer a free rental vehicle to boot!


edit: Scott Jaguar would have Joyces Jag for 3 to 4 days, they will not order the new tank until the vehicle is in their shop.

I can't see them charging $4K for a safety recall. Well, that franchise maybe but not Jaguar themselves....

I would DEFINITELY complain to Jaguar Corporate if I were the OP since the dealer should know about / check for safety recalls.

Yes for 2005 there is only one recall ever issued and that was for the fuel tank as was posted above.

I would call Jaguar and find out if this fix was ever done to your car. It is a free repair by Jaguar since it is an official recall. You should not have to pay IF it's the problem mentioned in the recall and from your description is does sound like that is the problem.

According to Jaguar my 2005 STR had the fuel tank replaced under this recall.

Our S-Type also had the fuel tank replaced under the R176 recall that Norri provided in his post above. It was done prior to us taking ownership. HIJaged, you should study up on this recall, print out the details, and then go do battle with your dealer. Go in fully informed and prepared, firm and confident, but remain professional and polite as you discuss this issue with them. After all, this is a well-known recall. You'll win your case if you are prepared and professional....

Thank you Norri! I would have had no idea where to obtain that info. I will pursue this route and see where it takes me. I am still alittle pissed though that this kind of thing could occur on a car that I already have paid to replace the passenger side "flange clamping ring" on the gas tank and they had the tank off the car at that time! In 2010 alone my cars front lower control arm bushings needed replacing, rear shock absorbers leaked, Throttle body quit, Air conditioner and condensor failed. In 2009 the car was recalled for a revised on board diognostic system software reconfiguration and: even the darn key fob was recalled to repair some kind of possible internal short! How much can a Jag enthusiast take before they begin to question their lifelong dream to own a Jaguar. I only have 50,000 miles on this car since November of 2004 when I bought it brand new.

Boy talk about bad luck!! I must say I think you got a bad 2005?? Jaguar was building them pretty good by then and scored in the top 3 brands that year in the quality ratings.

I think you prior fuel tank "flange clamping ring" should have been covered too. I bet what happened is they attempted a repair when it needs a new tank.

Please let us know how it goes. Be sure and find that recall and print it out and show it to the dealer when you take it in.

Additionally, if they say it was already done due to the "flange clamping ring" repair order, tell them it didn't take. And, if you paid for that job, you should be reimbursed.

Jaguar Corporate may be of assistance to you if your dealer does not see the light as regards the recall or the reimbursement.

 

Ditto, and they don't "Get it"...Torch the Mo&&^$^ F*((&^ in the Jaguar Dealers parking lot. Just kidding...but really.

Honolulu Jaguar got approval to provide the gas tank seal repair free of charge to me! All I have to do now is wait for the parts which could take anywhere from 4 days to 3 weeks. They have provided me with a dodge charger for as long as I need it; free as well! I have to say that I am very satisfied with my service rep and the research she did. Thanks again all my friends here in Jaguar Forums for your suggestions.

 

My 05 STR may have the same issue!

I went to fill my gas tank three weeks ago and gas began pouring out all over the ground. Initially, I was upset and was thinking the pump's auto-shut-off did not work. Gas was everywhere! My tank now only holds six gallons, any more and it leaks.

I'll take a look at the car myself this morning. I'll try to get it into the dealer this week and let you all know what is found.
