Fuel tank seals are leaking!

Im a bit late on this thread, but interestingly, my wife's 05 s type was one of the cars effected by the recall issued in 2007 by Jaguar. Dealer supposedly replaced the tank when I took it in for this recall way back then, and that was BEFORE we had any fuel odor issues or other evidence of a leak.
Now, I get the fuel odor when I top off the tank, but not if I only take it to 3/4. I am wondering if the tank they installed in 2007 has now failed.
Its kind of a shame for a "prestigious" manufacturer, Jaguar, to have so many issues with the cars.
I'm fighting lots of computer diagnostic issues that are well covered by others all over the internet, and I also have owned many other cars that didnt leak fuel or have so many issues.
I wish i could talk her into a Kia .

Vandenplas, XJS v12, X type the year they came out and the s type.
Wife has expensive taste.
But lets not pretend that Jaguar and their owners don't want to be painted in the "exotic" box. Jaguars are not for everyone and maintenance on them is not cheap. They are famous for peculiararities, and it gets frustrating trying to avoid Jag dealer by diy.
I have a 2002 Kia at home that we keep as a third "spare" car. It has 300,000 miles on it and if the engine blew up, I could replace the motor for less that I've spent trying to figure out which of many variables is causing a lean code that is famous on this forum.

well no one on the forum has figured out my problem, nor have 2 separate auto shops. should we count the threads on this forum for unsolved lean codes?
btw....I got it to pass smog byt sheer stubbornness over the computer and drive cycles. Got it down to evap and comp only and they passed it.
Then very rough idle. Changed out the new coils on bank 2 back to the old ones with 170,000 miles on them and it runs better.

There are almost no unsolved ones. I recall yours as the only one for some years.
A rough idle will show in OBD values.
Bear in mind most car places are part-swappers (fine for a brake job, oil change, etc). They have mechanics but commonly no tech guys who have a clue about OBD (despite it being 20+ yrs old and in all cars in that time).

Jakesdad,
The jag we have also shows up as having the recall. My issue is this; if the recall was actually done in 2007 (it is an 05 S-type) then how come the tank had the ring clamps at the two ports on top of the tank, as opposed to the threaded caps which seem to have been released as part of the recall.
Do you know what style of caps are on your jag?

I also have the black clamp rings which I would like to remove to replace the seals / gaskets. Have you any tips on how to remove them? I have a small fuel leak on the drivers side and a small EVAP leak code.

To my knowledge, it's not merely a matter of changing the seals, "THE ENTIRE FUEL TANK" must be removed and a new one that accepts the other type of seals must be put on. For this reason, it was a dealership issue. I would "Strongly suggest", you keep harping on the local dealership and if necessary, write a note the BBB. I don't believe this is a repair that should be left up to the owners, it should be performed by the dealership as mine was.
If you do not have an extended warranty, perhaps you should look into one. I believe Carchex will give you one though I don't have a price estimate and, you should be able to get the repairs done under the warranty.

In the case of my wifes jag, both the left hand and right hand clamps were split in the middle of the ring. The openings in the tank were out of round also.
I didnt want to take any chances of having a repeat problem, so I replaced the tank and the rings. The clamps that held the rings were ok.
Fortunately the center clamp ring was ok, they no longer make this part!

Thanks for the update. Did you confirm that your tank was the original tank? I just call Jaguar Corporate and confirmed that my car was repaired in 2007 however their files show that the original tank was retained. The representative indicated that there might be an opportunity to have Jaguar replace the tank (and seals). I need to have it diagnosed by a dealer first. I plan to schedule that service appointment as soon as possible and hope for the best outcome.

Update.. Jaguar US opened a case and advised me to have dealer diagnos. Dealer found leak at fuel tank seal and replaced seal- declared fixed. Jaguar US closed case. Upon topping off with gas, leak was worse than before. Contact at Jaguar US advise to have dealer confirm if original tank was still installed. Dealer confirmed YEs. Jaguar US authorized repair with new tank (XF part no.). About $4k in parts and $1k in labor. Waiting for all the parts to arrive.

Did you get it fixed ?
By the way, as I said in a post a long time ago, if the fault is still appearing in vehicles which were "fixed" under the recall, the hazard remains and NTSB should get involved.
I have a 2003 Mercedes e320 ( in addition to my gas leaking 2005 S Type ). Mercedes extended their warranty on the complete fuel system to 15 years with unlimited mileage and they are just about to replace the tank and associated components free of charge.
Jaguar make me somewhat ashamed to be British and they should bite the bullet and take care of this recurring issue.
