Default gas cap

I read here that the gas cap off of a 2003 f-150 is the same as the gas cap on the 2003 s-type. Can anyone confirm this? I am in need of a gas cap and if this is accurate, i'll get to the ford dealer for one. MUST be less expensive than Jag OEM part.

My nearest Jaguar dealer is in Mfs. They want 24.00 for the cap and 12.00 to ship. There is a Ford dealer here in town. Just seemed a bit high.

Try www.amazon.com - I believe $25.00 with free shipping - Jaguar OEM cap all the way...

25.00 is not bad at all. I had to let the dealership replace mine because I have another problem with gas fumes. But here's a copy of my invoice. 19.00.

Whilst searcing for a source of the P0171/174 codes, I ordered one of these:
Amazon.com: CST 6832 Fuel Cap Boxed: Automotive Amazon.com: CST 6832 Fuel Cap Boxed: Automotive

before I realized they changed the cap from 03 to 05. I also orderd one with a trap-door that you don't have to remove for fueling. Can't find a link to it just now. Anyway, I played around with all of my new and old fuel caps and found the 03 S-Type to be interchangeable with my 03 F-150. No joy on the 05. FWIW, I put the trap-door cap on the 03 S about 1 1/2 yrs ago - no problems - but then, it wasn't the one with the codes, either.

Well I'm trying to diagnose and EVAP issue so I went ahead and ordered a new cap from the Jag dealer. Not soon enough though as my CEL came on tonight on the way to work. I've already had the system "smoke tested" with no joy. I can tell this is going to be a lengthy issue to resolve. Thank you all for you help.

P0171/174 will not be reolved with a fuel cap. Your clue will be found by looking at the freeze frame data for the code with regard to engine speed and load. Also look at real time data for the fuel trims. LTFT compensation of 15 to 20% at idle will indicate a vacuum leak or false air. On the contrary if the figures are skewed at higher demand/rpm then clean the MAFS. Just be sure to have someone else drive while you are reading the data!

Oh, and the gas cap, look it up by VIN. There were screw threads and 1/4 turn caps fitted to the S-Types and I've seen people get it wrong!

Thanks for the info. I made sure to include my VIN to the dealer to ensure the correct gas cap. I'm trying to resolve code p0442. My present cap looks ok so I had my mechanic do the smoke test. Since nothing came of that, I've decided to start with the cheapest part to replace and go from there.

P0442 - that's a 0.040" leak. It's time for a smoke test. Throwing parts at it can get expensive.

I've got P0442 too so will be following in your foot steps. I can cancel the code long enough to sneak it past the upcoming safety test but want to fix it properly.

Check the black plastic canister under the hood. Several people have reported this can leak or crack. Usually does cause a hissing sound at idle. The canister is on the driver’s side of the engine in the back.

That code P0442 is for a small EVAP leak so probably not the gas cap. Oops! It does say the gas cap can be the problem?

Might be a problem if they use OBD and require all monitors to be Complete. Do they do that there?

Not sure, this will be first time going through an Ontario safety and emissions check.

Maybe a web site that explains?

Good luck...

Jagman, the smoke test was the 1st thing I had done but my mechanic said they could not find a leak. He suggested starting with the gas cap as it is a replacement, not OEM.
Tbird6, I've checked the canister but no hissing noise. I went so far as too take it off and visually inspect it. I saw no cracks or sticky dried gas. Hoses are in good shape as well.

It would be very surprising if the base requirement did not include a P1000. Without that, it would be rather pointless to even bother testing.

Yes but I think you mean the equivalent of P1111

(they won't actually test for P1111 since it's make-specific and many define it as an actual fault)

I meant that what they are looking for is "monitors ready". Thought that was P1000.

If it is P1111, it better be in the make/model database or it's going to require a lot of fancy explaining/education on the part of the owner/victim.

Maybe they read the parameters directly.

There was/is a member who works for Ontario Drive Clean. Maybe he'll see this and chime in.
