Gas Consumption, and Panelbeater, etc
Hi! I have now filled up my Jag for the first time. Is there anyone that is clever enough to work out my gas consumption so that I know if it's good, average or bad? I have a 2004, s type, v6. I filled the tank 100% up, then did 378km (half high way; half city driving); then filled up again to the max with high octane unleaded, it was $67 ($1.27 per litre at Costco). I am a gentle driver and for example, accelerate at a low to medium level when the light changes to green!
I am still looking for a panelbeater / aotoshop-place downtown Toronto that can buff an scratch out on the hood - not very deep, and about 6 cm long - but at a very prominent place on the hood near the Jaguar emblem, so I don't want to attempt to sand it out myself. Tried to buff it with Turtle wax, with no results! Also need to fix a light bump on one of the rear doors, have no idea where to go where they won't charge me an arm and a leg.
My outer fuel cap little door is not opening. When I push the lever located on the left hand side next to the steering wheel, nothing happens. I eventually got the cap open manually somehow, and then had problems closing it... I read on the net that this cap is a bad link in the lovely car's body.

I've moved your post from New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum to S-Type forum as the fuel consumption and fuel cap issue are model specific questions. You may need to take the panel beater question to Canada Region forum.
You started with a full tank, drove 378km and it took $67 to top the tank again.
1. Fuel purchased to top the tank = $67 at $1.27 per litre = 52.75 litres
2. Distance travelled = 378km
3. Consumption = Distance travelled divided by fuel consumed. 378 divided by 52.75 = 7.165 km per litre
Over to the S-Type owners to say if this is good or bad.

Graham, I think the OP is still having trouble navigating the site, I can only suggest he bookmark the S-type section for further reference.
7ish L/100km is excellent especially with a mix of highway and city. That's usually what I get with pure highway driving, irrespective of octane used. Short distance, city driving during the winter can see the average rise to 12-14ish.
Ref. the gas door, there's a lengthy post on this very subject. The solenoid arm/piston tends to stick.

I'd guess it is the memory that is moving it back to the pre set position.
Do you have a manual? If not you can download from the sticky section.
To set the memory put everything where you want it press the memory button until the red light comes on then press either the 1 or 2 button until you hear a ding.
Then post an intro in the new members section.

Also, on my '03 there is a manual fuel door release located inside the trunk (boot) adjacent to where the fuel door is located. If the fuel door is stuck closed, a tug on the manual handle should open it.

Thanks for confirming expected consumption figures for the S-Type in Canadian units of Km and Litres.
I could work out the figures for NewJagOwnerInToronto but can't think in terms of Km per Litre.
In the UK we buy fuel in Litres for vehicles with speedometers calibrated in Miles but most driver's here still think in terms of Miles per Gallon!

Canada is frustratingly one of those countries that also only got halfway converted to the metric system before getting distracted by shiny things. This makes life very confusing when you drive 15 KM to go shopping for some 2x4s and a half kilo of 3" wood screws with a 2.3mm square drive head. On the way back, we might stop at the supermarket to pick up some chicken advertised in the flyers at $2.99/pound but have to remember that it will actually be marked $.6.59/kg on the package. While cooking said chicken (375*F for 30 minutes), we might remark that it's going down to zero over night, meaning 0*C and should cover the plants against frost.
To make things worse our neighbours to the south use a unique measuring system for liquid volume, basically the 'US gallon' which makes cross border comparison of fuel consumption even more confusing.
Why can't we all just use furlongs per fortnight...................

TRIP COMPUTER, does my 2004 Jag has such a thing? What about a gadget that shows the outside temperature? - or am I now pushing my luck? Press the button on the end of the indicator stalk and a variety of info will show up on the message centre (where the mileage is displayed) including your fuel consumption and trip information.
I think you really need to read the manual if you don't have one there are download links in the "How To" section at the top of the page. Or go here TOPIx - TOPIx
Do you have navigation? If not the external temp should display at the top of the climate control screen.
23 in this picture it's an X Type but it's the same deal on the S.

on pure highway - flat level driving at 120 km/hr I make on 2007 S-type 3.0L
7L/100km. This is repetitive - but for highway drive only. Also - using cruise control.
On the city, driving easy as you mentioned - the consumption go up and average 12-14 L/100 km and more - depends on stops and traffic speed.
I replaced plugs and filters today - mechanic say the plugs are original and did 140,000 km - totally worn out. Fuel filter almost blocked with dirt and engine air fuel black and dirty hazard..
He say consumption should improve. Cant say yet, but the figures I got so far are great for me.
I expect you should meet those figures.
Consumption on heavy acceleration make consumption rocket high...
But is fun!!!

Ooops! Your right. I'm so used to seeing consumption expressed as L/100km driven I didn't see that Graham calculated km/L .
Looks like the OP actually consumed 13.9L/100km which is what I see for mixed driving in the winter. Not so great.
